Abstract

A web browser interface for visualizing realtime network communications in spatial communication environments allows communicants to interact with other communicants in an immersive spatial communication environment without having to install any specialized communication software and without requiring special proxies or firewall additions or exceptions.

Claims (31)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

maintaining a persistent virtual area that supports establishment of respective presences of communicants operating respective network nodes connected to the virtual area, wherein the virtual area comprises multiple zones each of which supports establishment of a respective presence for one or more communicants and is associated with a respective call-in telephone number;

establishing a presence in the virtual area for a user of a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) terminal device, wherein the establishing comprises receiving a particular one of the call-in telephone numbers in connection with a call from the PSTN terminal device and establishing the presence for the user in the respective one of the zones associated with the particular call-in telephone number; and

administering transmission of data associated with the virtual area to the PSTN terminal device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising establishing a respective presence in the virtual area for a communicant operating a respective network node.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the administering comprises managing establishment of a realtime audio connection between the network node and the PSTN terminal device based on respective zones of presence of the user and the communicant in the respective zones of the virtual area.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the establishing of the communicant's presence in the virtual area is initiated in response to a request from the PSTN terminal device to invite the communicant to the user's zone of presence in the virtual area.

5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising managing a current realtime communication session between the network node and the PSTN terminal device in the virtual area.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the managing comprises specifying locations of graphical representations of the user and the communicant in spatial relation to a graphical representation of the virtual area.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administering comprises administering transmission of audio data associated with the virtual area to the PSTN terminal device, and deriving the audio data from one or more realtime audio data streams respectively received from one or more network nodes being operated by one or more respective communicants who are present in the virtual area.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

establishing a respective presence in the respective zone of the virtual area associated with the particular call-in telephone number for each of multiple communicants operating other respective devices that are connected to the virtual area; and

further comprising, responsive to establishment of the presence of the user in the respective zone of the virtual area associated with the particular call-in telephone number, automatically administering audio communications between the PSTN terminal device and each of the other devices.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particular zone comprises a prop that is associated with functionality for sharing realtime data streams of a particular content type, the particular call-in telephone number is associated with the prop, and the establishing comprises automatically connecting the PSTN device to a realtime data stream of the particular content type being shared in connection with the prop based on the receipt of the particular call-in telephone number.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particular zone is associated with respective access permissions, and the establishing of the presence of the user in the particular zone is conditioned on the user satisfying the access permissions associated with the particular zone.

11. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

maintaining a persistent virtual area that supports establishment of respective presences of communicants operating respective network nodes connected to the virtual area, wherein the virtual area is associated with at least one call-in telephone number and a spatial visualization comprising a graphical representation of the virtual area and graphical representations of the user and the communicant positioned in their respective locations of presence in the virtual area;

establishing a presence in the virtual area for a user of a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) terminal device, wherein the establishing comprises receiving the call-in telephone number in connection with a call from the PSTN terminal device and establishing the presence for the user in the virtual area based on the receipt of the call-in telephone number; and

establishing a respective presence in the virtual area for a communicant operating a respective network node, wherein the establishing of the communicant's presence in the virtual area is initiated in response to a request from the PSTN terminal device to invite the communicant to the user's location of presence in the virtual area;

sending a specification of the spatial visualization to the network node; and

administering transmission of data associated with the virtual area to the PSTN terminal device, wherein the administering comprises managing establishment of a realtime audio connection between the network node and the PSTN terminal device based on respective locations of presence of the user and the communicant in the virtual area.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing data in association with the virtual area, and the administering comprises transmitting information derived from the stored data to the PSTN terminal device.

13. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

maintaining a persistent virtual area that supports establishment of respective presences of communicants operating respective network nodes connected to the virtual area, wherein the virtual area is associated with at least one call-in telephone number;

establishing a presence in the virtual area for a user of a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) terminal device, wherein the establishing comprises receiving the call-in telephone number in connection with a call from the PSTN terminal device and establishing the presence for the user in the virtual area based on the receipt of the call-in telephone number;

establishing a presence in the virtual area for a communicant operating a network node;

associating each of the user and the communicant with a respective object in the virtual area;

transmitting to the network node a specification of a spatial visualization of the virtual area and respective positions of the objects in relation to the spatial visualization; and

administering transmission of data associated with the virtual area to the PSTN terminal device, wherein the administering comprises administering synchronous audio communication between the PSTN terminal device and the network node.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the virtual area comprises zones associated with respective switching rules for establishing communications between devices based on the respective locations of the objects in relation to the zones; and

further comprising transmitting to the network node position data for navigating the object associated with the PSTN terminal device from one of the zones to another one of the zones based on virtual area navigation data received from the PSTN terminal device.
