Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis systems having electrodialysis and electrodeionization capabilities
View Patent ↗Systems and methods for hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis having integrated electrodialysis and electrodeionization capabilities are provided. In an embodiment, the dialysis system includes a carbon source, a urease source, an ED/EDI unit. The carbon source, urease source, and/or the ED/EDI unit can be in the form of removable cartridges.
1. A method of performing hemodialysis comprising:
passing dialysis fluid from a dialyzer through, in any order, a carbon source, a urease source, and a combination unit comprising an electrodialysis (“ED”) component and an electrodeionization (“EDI”) component to produce a cleaned dialysis fluid, wherein the ED component and the EDI component are separate, and wherein the dialysis fluid is passed within the combination unit via a fluid path from the ED component to the separate EDI component; and
returning the cleaned dialysis fluid to the dialyzer.
2. The method of claim 1 , which includes passing the dialysis fluid through an ion exchange unit before returning the cleaned dialysis fluid to the dialyzer.
3. The method of claim 1 , which includes adding at least one dialysis fluid concentrate to the dialysis fluid before returning the cleaned dialysis fluid to the dialyzer.
4. The method of claim 1 , which includes draining a portion of the dialysis fluid that is passed through at least one of the ED and EDI components.
5. The method of claim 1 , which includes recirculating a portion of the dialysis fluid that is passed through at least one of the ED and EDI components.
6. The method of claim 1 , which includes adding at least one of sterile/injectable or tap water to the dialysis fluid.
7. The method of claim 1 , which includes filtering the dialysis fluid before returning the cleaned dialysis fluid to the dialyzer.
8. A method of performing peritoneal dialysis comprising:
recirculating dialysis fluid removed from a patient or dialyzer through, in any order, a carbon source, a urease source, and a combination unit comprising an electrodialysis (“ED”) component and an electrodeionization (“EDI”) component to produce a cleaned dialysis fluid, wherein the ED component and the EDI component are separate, and wherein the dialysis fluid is passed within the combination unit via a fluid path from the ED component to the separate EDI component; and
returning the cleaned dialysis fluid to the patient or dialyzer.
9. The method of claim 8 , which includes passing the dialysis fluid through an ion exchange unit before returning the cleaned dialysis fluid to the patient.
10. The method of claim 8 , which includes adding at least one dialysis fluid concentrate to the dialysis fluid before returning the cleaned dialysis fluid to the patient.
