Abstract

A system that incorporates the subject disclosure may include, for example, a method that determines a pattern for a mouse pad, wherein the mouse pad comprises an electronic paper display and a processor and transmits the pattern to the mouse pad to enable the processor to present the pattern on the electronic paper display. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (48)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, system information regarding a program that utilizes a mouse associated with a mouse pad as a user interface;

determining a plurality of macros for the program;

determining, by the computing device, a pattern for the mouse pad from the system information, wherein the mouse pad comprises an electronic paper display and a processor, wherein the determining the pattern comprises generating mouse action areas, wherein the mouse action areas comprise portions of the mouse pad associated with a macro of the plurality of macros and defining a sub-pattern of the pattern that is associated with the macro;

transmitting, by the computing device, the pattern and the sub-pattern to the mouse pad to enable the processor to present the pattern and the sub-pattern on the electronic paper display;

providing, by the computing device, power to the mouse pad before the transmitting of the pattern to the mouse pad;

ceasing, by the computing device, the providing of the power to the mouse pad after completion of the transmitting of the pattern to the mouse pad, wherein the mouse pad continues to present the pattern on the electronic paper display while the power is no longer provided to the mouse pad; and

receiving, by the computing device, an indication from the mouse of a mouse button operation indicating the mouse is positioned over the sub-pattern during the mouse button operation.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing device and the processor are in communication by way of a hardwire connection, and

wherein the providing the power to the mouse pad is performed via a hardwire connection.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the presenting of the pattern on the electronic paper display occurs before the ceasing of the providing of the power to the mouse pad.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining of the pattern comprises:

editing the system information to be provisioned to the mouse pad as mouse pad presentation information; and

providing the mouse pad presentation information to the mouse pad to enable presentation of the mouse pad presentation information on the electronic paper display.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the receiving of the system information comprises determining statistics from the program to be displayed by the mouse pad.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the determining of the statistics comprises receiving information from a keyboard associated with the computing device.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the determining of the pattern comprises:

providing the mouse pad presentation information to the mouse pad; and

instructing the program to activate the macro associated with the sub-pattern responsive to receiving the indication.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining of the pattern comprises creating a reflective pattern on the mouse pad to enhance an accuracy of the mouse.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmitting of the pattern to the mouse pad to enable the processor to present the pattern on the electronic paper display is via a wireless communication between the computing device and the processor.

10. A mouse pad, comprising:

a memory that stores instructions;

an electronic paper display; and

a processor coupled to the memory and the electronic paper display, wherein responsive to executing the instructions, the processor performs operations comprising:

receiving a signal for the mouse pad, wherein the receiving of the signal comprises receiving system information regarding a program that utilizes a mouse associated with the mouse pad as a user interface, wherein macro information for the program is utilized to generate mouse action areas defining portions of the mouse pad associated with the macro including a sub-pattern that is associated with the macro;

determining a pattern for the electronic paper display including the sub-pattern from the signal;

receiving power at the mouse pad upon the receiving of the signal to the mouse pad;

presenting the pattern on the electronic paper display, wherein a mouse associated with the mouse pad provides an indication of a mouse button operation indicating the mouse is positioned over the sub-pattern during the mouse button operation to the program; and

ceasing the receiving of the power to the mouse pad after completion of the presenting of the pattern on the electronic paper display, wherein the mouse pad continues to present the pattern on the electronic paper display while the power is no longer provided to the mouse pad.

11. The mouse pad of claim 10 , wherein the receiving of the system information comprises receiving statistics from the program to be displayed by the mouse pad.

12. The mouse pad of claim 10 ,

wherein the macro is activated upon receiving the indication that the mouse button operation occurred when the mouse is positioned over the sub-pattern.

13. A non-transitory, machine-readable storage device, comprising instructions, wherein responsive to executing the instructions, a processor performs operations comprising:

receiving system information regarding a program that utilizes a mouse associated with a mouse pad as a user interface;

obtaining a macro for the program;

receiving a pattern for the mouse pad based on the system information, wherein the mouse pad comprises a display, wherein pattern includes mouse action areas, wherein the mouse action areas comprise a sub-pattern of the pattern that is associated with the macro;

receiving power at the mouse pad upon the receiving of the pattern to the mouse pad;

presenting the pattern on the display;

ceasing the receiving of the power to the mouse pad after completion of the presenting the pattern to the mouse pad, wherein the mouse pad continues to present the pattern on the display while the power is no longer provided to the mouse pad; and

receiving an indication from the mouse of a mouse button operation indicating the mouse is positioned over the sub-pattern during the mouse button operation, wherein the macro is activated by the program upon receiving a mouse button operation when the mouse is positioned over the sub-pattern.

14. The non-transitory, machine-readable storage device of claim 13 , wherein the display comprises an electronic paper display, and wherein the receiving the power is performed via a hardwire connection.

15. The non-transitory, machine-readable storage device of claim 14 , wherein the ceasing the receiving of the power at the mouse pad is performed after completion of the presenting the pattern on the electronic paper display.

16. The non-transitory, machine-readable storage device of claim 14 , wherein the receiving of the power provides enough of the power to allow the presenting of the pattern on the electronic paper display to change the electronic paper display to produce the pattern.

17. The non-transitory, machine-readable storage device of claim 14 , wherein the operations further comprise instructing the program to activate the macro upon receiving the indication that the mouse button operation occurred when the mouse is positioned over the sub-pattern.

The non-transitory, machine-readable storage device of claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise editing the system information according to a profile preference as mouse pad presentation information, wherein the mouse pad presentation information is provided to the display as the pattern.

19. The non-transitory, machine-readable storage device of claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise presenting a signal to a computing device according to an interaction of a mouse based on a location of the mouse on the display.

20. The non-transitory, machine-readable storage device of claim 13 , wherein the presenting the pattern on the display is performed during the receiving of the power.
