Abstract

A system and related method are disclosed for controlling condensation in a space. The system includes a fan and a sensor for sensing an environmental condition, such as temperature, humidity, or both. For instance, the sensors may sense an air temperature that is used to estimate or predict a surface temperature of an object within the room. The system also includes a controller capable of receiving controlling the fan based on the surface temperature. The system may additionally include a heater and/or a damper for transferring outside air into the space, either of which may be controlled by the controller based on the measurements.

Claims (29)

1. A system for controlling the circulation of air in an indoor area of a structure including an object within the structure, comprising:

a fan for circulating the air within the indoor area, said fan spaced apart from the object; and

a controller for predicting a temperature of the object and controlling the operation of the fan based on the temperature.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is adapted for predicting a surface temperature of the object.

3. The system of claim 2 , further including a sensor for sensing the air temperature, and wherein the surface temperature is predicted based on the air temperature.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller controls the speed and/or time of operation of the fan.

5. The system of claim 1 , further including a sensor for sensing the relative humidity of the air in the area and a sensor for sensing the temperature of the air in the indoor area, and wherein the controller is adapted for determining a dew point temperature based on the relative humidity and the air temperature.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller controls the fan to circulate the air when a condensation event is predicted.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller controls the fan to circulate the air when one or more of the following conditions is met:

the indoor air temperature is greater than or equal to the surface temperature plus a constant and the air temperature is trending upwardly;

the indoor air temperature is greater than or equal to the surface temperature plus a second constant greater than the first constant; or

the surface temperature is substantially less than the dew point temperature of the indoor air or the surface temperature is trending downward.

8. The system of claim 1 , further including a heater for heating the air in the space, the heater being controlled by the controller.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the heater is turned on when:

the surface temperature is less than or equal to the dew point temperature of the indoor air plus a third constant and the dew point temperature of the indoor air is trending upwardly; or

the surface temperature is less than or equal to the dew point temperature of the indoor air plus a fourth constant.

10. The system of claim 1 , further including a sensor for sensing one or more of an outdoor air temperature and an outdoor humidity and communicating the sensed outdoor air temperature and humidity to the controller.

11. The system of claim 10 , further including a damper for admitting outdoor air into the space when the relative humidity of the outdoor air is less than the relative humidity of the indoor air.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the opening and closing of the damper is controlled by the controller.

13. A method of preventing the formation of condensation on a surface of an object in an indoor area, comprising:

predicting a temperature of the object; and

circulating air in the indoor area based on the predicted temperature.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the predicting step comprises predicting the surface temperature based on the air temperature.

15. The method of claim 13 , further including the step of determining the dew point temperature of the air in the indoor area, comparing the sensed surface temperature with the dew point temperature, and circulating the air for a predetermined time based on the comparison.

16. The method of claim 13 , further including the step of determining a temperature of the air in the indoor area, comparing the air temperature with the surface temperature, and circulating the air for a predetermined time based on the comparison.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the step of circulating the air comprises activating a ceiling fan in the indoor area.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the step of circulating the air comprises opening a damper to admit outdoor air to the indoor area.

19. The method of claim 17 , further including the step of heating the indoor air.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the object comprises a metal object or concrete.
