Abstract

A computer-implemented method that includes receiving a request to generate an interface within a software application that is configured to play back one or more media files; for a first media file, generating an image representing a frame of the first media file; and causing the image to be displayed within the interface on a display device, where the image is configured to detect an event that causes a media player to be loaded into the software application behind the image.

Claims (55)

1. A computer-implemented method for initiating playing a video file within a web browser, comprising:

generating an interface within the web browser;

generating an image, a first portion of the image representing a frame of the video file, a second portion of the image including non-functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls; and

displaying the image within the interface.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, before generating the interface and at a time that that no media players are loaded into computer memory:

detecting a predetermined event.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the predetermined event includes at least one of:

a mouse cursor crossing a boundary associated with the image displayed within the interface;

at least one finger of a user interacting with the image displayed within the interface; or

a keyboard keystroke.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising, in response to detecting the predetermined event:

loading a media player for the first time into computer memory, the media player including functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls that coincide with the non-functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls in the second portion of the image.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

displaying the functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls of the media player in the first section of the interface and behind the non-functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls in the second portion of the image.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising, while the media player loads into the computer memory:

increasing a transparency of the image.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the transparency of the image is increased proportionally to a load status of the media player.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the transparency of the image is increased over a pre-configured amount of time.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising, after the media player is loaded into the computer memory:

removing the image from the first section of the interface, and retaining the functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls of the media player in the first section of the interface.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising, after the image is removed from the first section of the interface:

activating the functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls of the media player, so that functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls become accessible from the interface in the web browser.

11. A device for playing a video file within a web browser, comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one memory, including instructions that, when executed on the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform data processing activities comprising:

generating an interface within the web browser;

generating an image, a first portion of the image representing a frame of the video file, a second portion of the image including non-functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls; and

displaying the image within the interface.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the instructions further comprise, before generating the interface and at a time that that no media players are loaded into computer memory:

detecting a predetermined event.

13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the instructions further comprise, in response to detecting the predetermined event:

loading a media player for the first time into computer memory, the media player including functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls that coincide with the non-functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls in the second portion of the image.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the instructions further comprise:

displaying the functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls of the media player in the first section of the interface and behind the non-functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls in the second portion of the image.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the instructions further comprise, while the media player loads into the computer memory:

increasing a transparency of the image.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further comprise, after the media player is loaded into the computer memory:

removing the image from the first section of the interface, and retaining the functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls of the media player in the first section of the interface.

17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the instructions further comprise, after the image is removed from the first section of the interface:

activating the functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls of the media player, so that functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls become accessible from the interface in the web browser.

18. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to initiate playing a video file within a web browser by perform data processing activities comprising:

generating an interface within the web browser;

generating an image, a first portion of the image representing a frame of the video file, a second portion of the image including non-functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls; and

displaying the image within the interface.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the instructions further comprise:

before generating the interface and at a time that that no media players are loaded into computer memory, detecting a predetermined event;

in response to detecting the predetermined event, loading a media player for the first time into computer memory, the media player including functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls that coincide with the non-functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls in the second portion of the image;

displaying the functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls of the media player in the first section of the interface and behind the non-functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls in the second portion of the image;

while the media player loads into the computer memory, increasing a transparency of the image;

after the media player is loaded into the computer memory, removing the image from the first section of the interface, and retaining the functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls of the media player in the first section of the interface; and

after the image is removed from the first section of the interface, activating the functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls of the media player, so that functional playback, volume, and video resolution controls become accessible from the interface in the web browser.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the predetermined event includes at least one of:

a mouse cursor crossing a boundary associated with the image displayed within the interface;

at least one finger of a user interacting with the image displayed within the interface; or

a keyboard keystroke.
