Abstract

Regulation of powertrain converter circuits is provided. The power conversion may include converting between direct current and alternating current and the regulation may include reduction of distortion on switching start up and zero-crossings. Solid-state implementations, code implementations, and mixed implementations are provided.

Claims (38)

1. A powertrain controller system configured to regulate a powertrain converter circuit using a process comprising:

determining that a powertrain converter circuit is within a start-up period or determining that output current from the powertrain converter circuit is approaching a reference indicating a reversal in polarity of the output current from the powertrain converter circuit, or both;

after determining, and when a determination is made that the powertrain converter circuit is within a start-up period, triggering a correction signal that serves to reduce output current distortion during the start-up period;

after determining, and when a determination is made that the output current from the powertrain converter circuit is approaching a reference indicating a reversal in polarity, triggering a correction signal that serves to reduce output current distortion at least before, during or after reversal of polarity of the output current,

wherein the powertrain converter circuit comprises switches configured to receive switching signals that serve to operate the switches to convert current from an energy supply at least between direct current and alternating current.

2. The powertrain controller system of claim 1 configured to regulate a powertrain converter circuit using a process further comprising:

pulsing switches of the powertrain converter circuit before the output current crosses the reference indicating a reversal of polarity, the pulsing serving to push the current through the reference crossing where the reference crossing is indicative of a change in polarity of the output current.

3. The powertrain controller of claim 2 wherein pulsing the switches of the powertrain converter circuit begins within 300 microseconds of the output current reference crossing and wherein the powertrain converter circuit comprises switches configured to receive switching signals that serve to operate the switches to convert current from an energy supply from direct current to alternating current.

4. The powertrain controller system of claim 2 wherein pulsing the switches of the powertrain converter circuit occurs within a predetermined percentage of the waveform cycle time of the output current and wherein the pulsing consists of a single burst.

5. The powertrain controller system of claim 1 configured to regulate a powertrain converter circuit using a process further comprising:

pulsing switches of the powertrain converter circuit after the output current crosses the reference indicating a reversal of polarity, the pulsing serving to force the current through the reference crossing where the reference crossing is indicative of a change in polarity of the output current.

6. The powertrain controller system of claim 3 wherein pulsing the switches of the powertrain converter circuit occurs within a predetermined percentage of the waveform cycle time of the output current and wherein the pulsing consists of a single burst.

7. The powertrain controller of claim 5 wherein pulsing the switches of the powertrain converter circuit begins within 300 microseconds of the output current reference crossing and wherein the powertrain converter circuit comprises switches configured to receive switching signals that serve to operate the switches to convert current from an energy supply from direct current to alternating current.

8. The powertrain controller of claim 1 wherein the alternating current is generated into a waveform with boundary parameters that include a variable first boundary and a fixed second boundary.

9. The powertrain controller of claim 8 wherein the first boundary is an upper boundary and the second boundary is a lower boundary.

10. The powertrain controller system of claim 1 configured to regulate a powertrain converter circuit using a process further comprising:

pulsing switches of the powertrain converter circuit starting before the output current crosses the reference indicating a reversal of polarity and maintaining the pulse until after the output current has crossed the reference indicating a reversal of polarity, the pulsing serving to push the current through the reference crossing where the reference crossing is indicative of a change in polarity of the output current.

11. The powertrain controller system of claim 10 where the pulsing has an impact on efficiency and an effect of reducing distortion of the output current at the reference crossing.

12. The powertrain controller system of claim 10 wherein the duration of the pulsing after crossing the reference is longer than the duration of pulsing before crossing the reference.

13. The powertrain controller system of claim 10 wherein the duration of the pulsing before and after crossing the reference is substantially the same.

14. A method of regulating a powertrain converter circuit comprising:

determining that a powertrain converter circuit is within a start-up period or determining that output current from the powertrain converter circuit is approaching a reference indicating a reversal in polarity of the output current from the powertrain converter circuit, or both;

after determining and when a determination is made that the powertrain converter circuit is within a start-up period, triggering a correction signal that serves to reduce output current distortion during the start-up period;

after determining and when a determination is made that the output current from the powertrain converter circuit is approaching a reference indicating a reversal in polarity, triggering a correction signal that serves to reduce output current distortion at least before, during or after reversal of polarity of the output current,

wherein the powertrain converter circuit comprises switches configured to receive switching signals that serve to operate the switches to convert current from an energy supply at least between direct current and alternating current.
