Abstract

An optical network including a plurality of gateway nodes interconnected with a plurality of intermediate nodes with segments of fiber. The network includes a plurality of devices, such as reconfigurable optical add drop multiplexers, optimally placed at various nodes throughout the network. The device placement is optimized with an integer linear programming analysis considering span definition such that any given span involves some number of segments not exceeding a number of segments that would require wavelength regeneration, cost of placement of a device at a given node, cost of wavelength regeneration, and various parameters and constraints.

Claims (27)

1. A system for assisting in optimization of a telecommunications network, the system comprising:

at least one processor;

a display screen;

a database storing costs associated with placement of regeneration devices in the telecommunications network;

a graphical user interface rendered by the processor on the display screen, the graphical user interface being configured to display an optimal placement for at least one regeneration device in the telecommunications network; and

memory, operatively connected to the at least one processor and containing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

receive information describing fiber segments in the telecommunications network;

identify, based on the information, a plurality of spans of the fiber segments in the telecommunications network that can be traversed by a wave without intermediate regeneration; and

determine the optimal placement for at least one regeneration device in the telecommunications network based on at least:

the costs stored in the database;

forecasted traffic demand on the telecommunications network; and

a constraint requiring that, for at least a particular span of the identified spans, the particular span may not have more than an identified maximum number of intermediate nodes for the particular span and may not carry more than a maximum number of wavelengths, wherein the intermediate nodes are nodes that are interconnected without intermediate regeneration.

2. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the at least one regeneration device is a reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) device.

3. A system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimal placement of the ROADM device is displayed by the graphical user interface to be a modified placement of one of the plurality of ROADM devices.

4. A system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimal placement of the ROADM device is displayed by the graphical user interface to be a new ROADM device in addition to the plurality of ROADM devices.

5. A method for assisting in optimizing a telecommunications network, the method comprising:

receiving information describing fiber segments in the telecommunications network;

identifying, based on the information, a plurality of spans of the fiber segments in the telecommunications network that can be traversed by a wave without intermediate regeneration; and

determining an optimal placement for at least one regeneration device in the telecommunications network based on at least:

costs associated with placement of regeneration devices in the telecommunications network;

forecasted traffic demand on the telecommunications network;

a constraint requiring that, for at least a particular span of the identified spans, the particular span may not have more than an identified maximum number of intermediate nodes for the particular span and may not carry more than a maximum number of wavelengths, wherein the intermediate nodes are nodes that are interconnected without intermediate regeneration; and

displaying the optimal placement for the at least one regeneration device in a graphical user interface.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the determining the optimal placement is further comprises identifying the maximum number of intermediate nodes and the maximum bandwidth for the particular span.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining the optimal placement is further based on a constraint that each span in the identified spans has a device placed at each node endpoint of such span.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining the optimal placement further comprises applying at least one first linear programming model to the forecasted traffic demand, the identified spans, the costs, and the constraint.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining the optimal placement further comprises applying at least one second linear programming model to specify indices of specific wavelengths to be used on each identified span.
