Abstract

A digital camera is provided with a vertically long camera body having an approximately rectangular solid shape. An LCD panel provided in a rear surface of the camera body is arranged such that longitudinal directions of the display screen and the camera body correspond to each other. The digital camera is operated through a touch panel provided in a lower portion of the display screen. In a taking mode, an image is displayed in a small size on an upper portion of the display screen. In reproducing, the camera body is rotated sideways by 90 degree. In a reproducing mode, display posture of the image is also rotated by 90 degree, and the image is displayed in a large size on the entire display screen.

Claims (27)

1. An imaging apparatus having at least a still image taking mode and a reproducing mode comprising:

an imaging device for photoelectrically converting a subject image focused through a taking lens to obtain a captured image;

a main body containing said imaging device, having a long shape and being in a unitary format but not in a folding format;

a display of a touch panel type attached to a first surface of said main body and having a display screen in a rectangular shape disposed such that a long side direction thereof corresponds to that of said main body;

an image display area which is provided in an upper area of said display and displays a through image in said still image taking mode; and

a blank area which is provided in a lower area of said display and does not display said through image in said still image taking mode,

wherein a release key which is one of operation members of a touch panel type for recording said captured image is displayed in said blank area,

wherein said taking lens is disposed in an upper portion on a second surface opposite to said first surface of said main body, where the upper is defined as a side where said taking lens is disposed in said long side direction, and the lower is opposite thereto,

wherein said release key is at a position that can be operated with a thumb, when a lower part of said main body is held with one hand so that said thumb is on said first surface and fingers except said thumb are on said second surface, and

wherein the total area of said operation members which are displayed as keys and include said release key is smaller than the area of said blank area except said operation members which are displayed as said keys and include said release key.

2. An apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a display controller for switching between the still image taking mode for capturing an image with the imaging device and the reproducing mode for reproducing and displaying image captured with the imaging device;

wherein during the still image taking mode, the lower area displays at least one key operable in response to a user input,

wherein during the reproducing mode, the display displays the captured image in the upper and lower areas of the display.

3. An apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an operation member for switching between the still image taking mode and the reproducing mode.

4. An apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a posture detector for detecting a vertical posture of the main body and horizontal posture in which the main body is rotated by 90 degree from the vertical posture.

5. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein during the still image taking mode, the upper area of the display displaying the image detected by the imaging device changes position when the posture detector detects that the main body has changed from a vertical posture to a horizontal posture or from a horizontal posture to a vertical posture.

6. An apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein during the still image taking mode, the lower area of the display displaying the at least one key changes position when the posture detector detects that the main body has changed from a vertical posture to a horizontal posture or from a horizontal posture to a vertical posture.

7. An apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the upper area of the display is positioned above the lower area of the display regardless of the posture detected by the posture detector.

8. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein during the still image taking mode, the displayed captured image rotates 90 degrees when the posture detector detects that the main body has changed from a vertical posture to a horizontal posture or from a horizontal posture to a vertical posture.

9. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the captured image displayed during the reproducing mode fills the upper area and the lower area the display.

10. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the upper area of the display is positioned above the lower area of the display when the main body is in a vertical posture.

11. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the display is configured to display a number of the captured image during the reproducing mode.

12. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the display is configured to display at least one key operable in response to a user input during the reproducing mode.

13. An apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the display is configured to change the captured image being displayed from a first image to a second image in response to operation of the at least one key.

14. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein operation of a first key of the at least one key displayed in the second portion of the display during the still image taking mode causes the apparatus to capture an image detected by the imaging device.

15. An apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a release button on the main body, wherein operation of the release button causes the apparatus to capture an image detected by the imaging device.
