Electromagnetic test device to predict a usable life of a vacuum interrupter in the field
View Patent ↗An electromagnetic testing assembly to predict a usable life of an installed vacuum interrupter in the field, which can include an electromagnetic testing device connected to a flexible magnetic field coil to generate a potential in a vacuum interrupter in an installation, magnetically monitor ion flow across one or more gaps in the vacuum interrupter, and apply trend data, tube chart information, and an algorithm to predict the usable life.
1. An electromagnetic testing system for predicting a usable life of an installed vacuum interrupter, the electromagnetic testing system comprising:
a flexible magnetic field coil configured to be placed around an installed vacuum interrupter;
a power supply connected to the flexible magnetic field coil and operable to generate a DC current and to apply the DC current to the flexible magnetic field coil to generate a magnetic field to cause ion current flow across one or more gaps inside the installed vacuum interrupter; and
a processor configured to measure the ion current flow across the one or more gaps inside the installed vacuum interrupter and to calculate a pressure based on a difference in measured quantity of ions flowing across the one or more gaps;
wherein the difference in measured quantity of ions flowing is a difference between a quantity of ions flowing before the one or more gaps and a quantity of ions flowing after the one or more gaps.
2. The electromagnetic testing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more gaps comprise a first gap inside the installed vacuum interrupter; and wherein the magnetic field created by the power supply in connection with the flexible magnetic field coil causes a DC potential to cross the first gap.
3. The electromagnetic testing system of claim 2 , wherein the installed vacuum interrupter includes a vapor shield and a moving contact assembly, and wherein the first gap is between the vapor shield and the moving contact assembly.

The electromagnetic testing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more gaps comprise first and second gaps inside the installed vacuum interrupter; and wherein the magnetic field created by the power supply in connection with the flexible magnetic field coil causes a DC potential to cross the first and second gaps.

The electromagnetic testing system of claim 4 , wherein the installed vacuum interrupter includes a vapor shield and a moving contact assembly, and wherein the first gap is between the vapor shield and the moving contact assembly; wherein the installed vacuum interrupter includes a fixed contact assembly; and wherein the second gap is between the fixed contact assembly and the moving contact assembly.

The electromagnetic testing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more gaps comprise first, second, and third gaps inside the installed vacuum interrupter; and wherein the magnetic field created by the power supply in connection with the flexible magnetic field coil causes a DC potential to cross the first, second, and third gaps.
7. The electromagnetic testing system of claim 6 , wherein the processor measures the ion current flow across the third gap.
8. The electromagnetic testing system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine an anticipated life expectancy of the installed vacuum interrupter as a function of the calculated pressure.
9. The electromagnetic testing system of claim 8 , wherein the processor determines the anticipated life expectancy of the installed vacuum interrupter as a function of a trend of the calculated pressure over time.
10. The electromagnetic testing system of claim 8 , wherein the processor determines the anticipated life expectancy of the installed vacuum interrupter by matching the pressure to an ionic current vs. pressure curve.
11. The electromagnetic testing system of claim 10 , wherein the installed vacuum interrupter has a size; and wherein the ionic current vs. pressure curve is for the size of the installed vacuum interrupter.
12. The electromagnetic testing system of claim 10 , wherein the ionic current vs. pressure curve serves as a model of the anticipated life expectancy of installed vacuum interrupter.

The electromagnetic testing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more gaps comprises first, second, and third gaps; wherein the magnetic field causes ion current flow across the first, second, and third gaps; and wherein the processor is configured to simultaneously measure the ion current flow across the first, second, and third gaps, and to calculate the pressure based on ion current drops across each of the first, second, and third gaps.

The electromagnetic testing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more gaps comprises first, second, and third gaps; wherein the magnetic field causes ion current flow across the first, second, and third gaps; and wherein the processor is configured to simultaneously measure the ion current flow across the third gap, and to calculate the pressure based on ion current drops across the third gap.
15. The electromagnetic testing system of claim 1 , further comprising a client device associated with the processor, power supply, and flexible magnetic field coil, and configured to communicate therewith over a wireless network; and wherein the client device is configured to selectively cause the processor to measure the ion current flow across the one or more gaps.
