Abstract

A beverage preparation machine for dispensing beverages comprising: a housing; a first reservoir station; a first reservoir for containing an aqueous medium, the first reservoir being connectable to said first reservoir station; an auxiliary module station for receiving an auxiliary module.

Claims (58)

1. A beverage preparation machine comprising:

a housing;

a cartridge receiving portion for receiving a cartridge containing at least one beverage ingredient;

a movable station pivotally connected to the housing and pivotal between first and second positions relative to the housing;

a component releasably connectable to the movable station that receives an aqueous medium used with the at least one beverage ingredient to form a beverage;

a fluid flow path in the movable station adapted to permit the aqueous medium to travel from the component toward the cartridge receiving portion.

2. The beverage preparation machine of claim 1 wherein the movable station includes an inner portion pivotally connected to the housing and an outer, disc-shaped base plate portion for receiving the component.

The beverage preparation machine of claim 1 the component has a generally cylindrical body with a lower end portion configured to be connected to the movable station, an upper end portion spaced from the lower end portion, and a cylindrical wall extending between the upper and lower end portions of the component.

The beverage preparation machine of claim 3 wherein the generally cylindrical body of the component has an outer diameter and the movable station includes a disc-shaped base plate for supporting the lower end portion of the component with the disc-shaped base plate having an outer diameter substantially the same as the outer diameter of the cylindrical body of the component.

5. The beverage preparation machine of claim 1 wherein the housing has a lower base for being supported on a surface; and

the pivot connection between the movable station and the housing defines a pivot axis extending orthogonally to the surface with the housing base supported on the surface.

6. The beverage preparation machine of claim 1 wherein the housing includes an outer vertical wall and the movable station extends laterally outward from the housing vertical wall with the movable station pivoted to one of the first and second positions.

7. The beverage preparation machine of claim 1 wherein the cartridge receiving portion includes a cartridge holder for holding the cartridge and an inlet piercer configured to pierce the cartridge.

8. The beverage preparation machine of claim 7 wherein the cartridge receiving portion includes an outlet piercer configured to pierce the cartridge.

9. The beverage preparation machine of claim 1 wherein the component comprises an auxiliary module.

10. The beverage preparation machine of claim 1 further comprising a fluid flow path in the housing and a pump connected to the fluid flow path and configured to advance fluid along the flow path toward the cartridge receiving portion.

11. A beverage preparation machine comprising:

a housing;

a cartridge receiving portion for receiving a cartridge containing at least one beverage ingredient;

a movable station pivotally connected to the housing and pivotal between first and second positions relative to the housing; and

a component releasably connectable to the movable station that receives an aqueous medium used with the at least one beverage ingredient to form a beverage,

wherein the component and the movable station include cooperating portions of a fluid connection that form a fluid flow path with the component connected to the movable station.

The beverage preparation machine of claim 11 further comprising conduit in the housing coupled to the fluid connection portion of the movable station and the cartridge receiving portion such that connecting the component to the movable station places the component in fluid communication with the conduit in the housing.

The beverage preparation machine of claim 11 wherein the movable station includes an inner portion pivotally connected to the housing, an enlarged outer base plate having a fluid connection member thereon for connecting to a cooperating fluid connection member of the component, and a narrowed neck portion intermediate the inner portion and the outer base plate.

14. The beverage preparation machine of claim 11 wherein the movable station includes an inner portion pivotally connected to the housing and an outer, disc-shaped base plate portion for receiving the component.

The beverage preparation machine of claim 11 wherein the component has a generally cylindrical body with a lower end portion configured to be connected to the movable station, an upper end portion spaced from the lower end portion, and a cylindrical wall extending between the upper and lower end portions of the component.

The beverage preparation machine of claim 15 wherein the generally cylindrical body of the component has an outer diameter and the movable station includes a disc-shaped base plate for supporting the lower end portion of the component with the disc-shaped base plate having an outer diameter substantially the same as the outer diameter of the cylindrical body of the component.

17. The beverage preparation machine of claim 11 wherein the housing has a lower base for being supported on a surface; and

the pivot connection between the movable station and the housing defines a pivot axis extending orthogonally to the surface with the housing base supported on the surface.

18. The beverage preparation machine of claim 11 wherein the housing includes an outer vertical wall and the movable station extends laterally outward from the housing vertical wall with the movable station pivoted to one of the first and second positions.

19. The beverage preparation machine of claim 11 wherein the cartridge receiving portion includes a cartridge holder for holding the cartridge and an inlet piercer configured to pierce the cartridge.

20. The beverage preparation machine of claim 19 wherein the cartridge receiving portion includes an outlet piercer configured to pierce the cartridge.

21. The beverage preparation machine of claim 11 wherein the component comprises an auxiliary module.

22. The beverage preparation machine of claim 11 further comprising a fluid flow path in the housing and a pump connected to the fluid flow path and configured to advance fluid along the flow path toward the cartridge receiving portion.

23. A beverage preparation machine comprising:

a housing;

a cartridge receiving portion for receiving a cartridge containing at least one beverage ingredient;

a movable station pivotally connected to the housing and pivotal between first and second positions relative to the housing; and

a component releasably connectable to the movable station that receives an aqueous medium used with the at least one beverage ingredient to form a beverage,

wherein the component includes a valve and the movable station includes a valve connector that matingly engages with the valve with connection of the component to the movable station.

24. A beverage preparation machine comprising:

a housing;

a cartridge receiving portion for receiving a cartridge containing at least one beverage ingredient;

a movable station pivotally connected to the housing and pivotal between first and second positions relative to the housing; and

a component releasably connectable to the movable station that receives an aqueous medium used with the at least one beverage ingredient to form a beverage,

wherein the movable station and the component include a fluid connection therebetween with the component connected to the movable station and aqueous medium in the component flows toward the cartridge receiving portion and mixes with the at least one beverage ingredient of the cartridge during operation of the beverage preparation machine.

25. A beverage preparation machine comprising:

a housing;

a cartridge receiving portion for receiving a cartridge containing at least one beverage ingredient;

a movable station pivotally connected to the housing and pivotal between first and second positions relative to the housing; and

a component releasably connectable to the movable station that receives an aqueous medium used with the at least one beverage ingredient to form a beverage,

wherein the movable station includes an inner portion pivotally connected to the housing, an enlarged outer base plate having a fluid connection member thereon for connecting to a cooperating fluid connection member of the component, and a narrowed neck portion intermediate the inner portion and the outer base plate.

26. A beverage preparation machine comprising:

a housing;

a cartridge receiving portion for receiving a cartridge containing at least one beverage ingredient;

a movable station pivotally connected to the housing and pivotal between first and second positions relative to the housing; and

a component releasably connectable to the movable station that receives an aqueous medium used with the at least one beverage ingredient to form a beverage,

wherein the housing includes a base with an outer periphery, the movable station is pivotally connected to the housing inward of the outer periphery of the housing base, and the movable station includes a plate portion for receiving the component that is disposed outward from the periphery of the housing base with the movable station pivoted to one of the first and second positions.
