Abstract

Among other things, enhancing spectral contrast for a cochlear implant listener includes detecting a time domain signal. A first transformation is applied to the detected time domain signal to convert the time domain signal to a frequency domain signal. A second transformation is applied to the frequency domain signal to express the frequency domain signal as a sum of two or more components. A sensitivity of the cochlear implant listener to detect modulation of each component is obtained.

Claims (28)

1. A method for enhancing the operation of a cochlear implant system, comprising:

receiving a time domain signal at sound processing circuitry of a user;

applying in the sound processing circuitry a first transformation to the time domain signal to form a first frequency domain signal;

applying in the sound processing circuitry a second transformation to the frequency domain signal to form a modulation spectrum comprised of a plurality of modulation components;

modifying the modulation spectrum at the sound processing circuitry; and

taking an inverse transform of the modified modulation spectrum at the sound processing circuitry to arrive at a second frequency domain signal having increased contrast.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sound processing circuitry is contained within an external component of the cochlear implant system.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the modulation spectrum comprises enhancing contribution of select one or more modulation components.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the modulation spectrum comprises enhancing at least one value in the modulation spectrum.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the first transformation comprises applying a linear transformation.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein applying the linear transformation comprises applying one of a Fourier transformation and wavelet transformation.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the second transformation comprises applying a linear transformation.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein applying the linear transformation comprises applying one of a Fourier transformation and wavelet transformation.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting the second frequency domain signal to the cochlear implant of a user.

10. A cochlear implant system comprising:

a sound processing circuitry adapted to execute program code to:

receive a time domain signal;

apply a first transformation to the time domain signal to form a first frequency domain signal;

apply circuitry a second transformation to the frequency domain signal to form a modulation spectrum comprised of a plurality of modulation components;

modify the modulation spectrum; and

take an inverse transform of the modified modulation spectrum to arrive at a second frequency domain signal having increased contrast.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the sound processing circuitry is contained within an external component of the cochlear implant system.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein to modify the modulation spectrum the sound processor circuitry is further adapted to execute program code to enhance contribution of select one or more modulation components.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein to modify the modulation spectrum the sound processor circuitry is further adapted to execute program code to enhance at least one value in the modulation spectrum.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein to apply the first transformation the sound processor circuitry is further adapted to execute program code to apply a linear transformation.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein to apply the linear transformation the sound processor circuitry is further adapted to execute program code to apply one of a Fourier transformation and wavelet transformation.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein to apply the second transformation the sound processor circuitry is further adapted to execute program code to apply a linear transformation.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein to apply the linear transformation the sound processor circuitry is further adapted to execute program code to apply one of a Fourier transformation and wavelet transformation.
