Abstract

A thrombectomy apparatus for breaking up thrombus or other obstructive material in a lumen of a vascular graft or vessel. The apparatus includes a wire having a first configuration and a second deployed configuration, the wire having a straighter configuration in the first configuration. The wire is operatively connected to a motor for rotation of the wire to contact and break up the thrombus or other obstructive material. A blocking device at a distal portion of the apparatus is movable between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration, and is configured in the expanded configuration to block thrombus dislodged by rotation of the wire.

Claims (15)

1. An apparatus for insertion into a lumen of a vascular graft or vessel, the apparatus comprising wire, a motor operatively connected to the wire and actuable for rotation of the wire to dislodge particles, and a blocking device at a distal portion of the apparatus, the blocking device expandable from a reduced profile insertion position to an expanded position within the lumen to block dislodged particles from distal flow distal of the apparatus, wherein the wire is sinuous in configuration and assumes its sinuous configuration when in a deployed configuration and is insertable in a collapsed configuration.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blocking device is non-rotatably connected to the wire such that the wire is rotatable independent of the blocking device.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus includes at least one inflatable balloon, the at least one inflatable balloon positioned proximal of the blocking device.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blocking device includes a basket having a proximal portion of the basket converging into a first tubular portion and a distal portion converging into a second tubular portion.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blocking device includes a plurality of wires and a material to block at least a portion of the wires, the wires extend longitudinally before expansion and expand radially.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the covering is a porous material.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blocking device includes a plurality of wires forming loops on opposing sides of a longitudinal axis of the apparatus.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein expansion of the wires to form loops stretches a membrane attached to the wires.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a flexible sheath, the flexible sheath movable from a first position to cover the blocking device and a second position to expose the blocking device, and a control operatively connected to the sheath for sliding the sheath relative to the wire, wherein the sheath exposes the wire so the wire can move from a first configuration to a second configuration.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a locking engagement to lock the sheath in position.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the sheath has a lumen to transport fluid into the vessel or graft.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blocking device is configured to capture dislodged particles.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wire has a non-linear configuration.

14. The apparatus of 1 , wherein the wire has a J-tip.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a soft atraumatic tip attached to a distal end of the wire.
