Abstract

Various embodiments are directed to techniques managing telephone numbers and other telecommunication identifiers when placing and receiving calls or messages from a single device. In some embodiments, one of a plurality of outbound telephone numbers or other identifiers associated with the device or an application executing on the device may be selected when making an outbound telephone call or sending a message. In another embodiment, an outbound telephone number or other identifier is automatically selected when making an outbound telephone call or sending a message based on an association of that outbound telephone number with the intended recipient of the call or message.

Claims (53)

1 . At least one non-transitory machine-readable medium comprising a set of instructions that in response to being executed on a computing device cause the computing device to:

display at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with an outbound communication request on a display component under control of the computing device;

receive input indicating a destination communication identifier;

select one of the at least two communication identifiers to be associated with the outbound communication request; and

cause the communication request to be initiated using the selected communication identifier as the outbound communication identifier associated with the communication request.

2 . The at least one non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the communication request includes a telephone call communication request, a short message service (SMS) text communication request, a multi-media message service (MMS) communication request, a video chat communication request, and a text chat communication request.

3 . The at least one non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 2 , wherein the communication identifier includes a telephone number, a social media identifier, and a chat identifier.

4 . The at least one non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 3 , wherein displaying the at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request comprises instructions that in response to being executed on the computing device cause the computing device to:

display the at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request on one portion of the display component; and

display a keypad dialer on another portion of the display component.

5 . The at least one non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 3 , wherein the display component is a touchscreen component responsive to touch input.

6 . The at least one non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 3 , wherein displaying the at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request comprises instructions that in response to being executed on the computing device cause the computing device to:

display the at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request on one portion of the display component; and

display contact information from a contact database on another portion of the display component, the contact information including at least one contact communication identifier associated with the contact.

7 . The at least one non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the contact information includes a default outbound communication identifier associated with the contact such that communication requests made to a contact use the default outbound communication identifier associated with the contact.

8 . The at least one non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 7 , comprising instructions that in response to being executed on the computing device cause the computing device to:

accept input overriding the default outbound communication identifier and replacing it with one of the other outbound communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request.

9 . An apparatus, comprising:

a processor component; and

dialer interface logic to be executed by the processor component to:

display at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with an outbound communication request on a display component under control of the computing device;

receive input indicating a destination communication identifier;

select one of the at least two communication identifiers to be associated with the outbound communication request; and

cause the communication request to be initiated using the selected communication identifier as the outbound communication identifier associated with the communication request.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the communication request includes a telephone call communication request, a short message service (SMS) text communication request, a multi-media message service (MMS) communication request, a video chat communication request, and a text chat communication request.

11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the communication identifier includes a telephone number, a social media identifier, and a chat identifier.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , the dialer interface logic to be executed by the processor component to:

display the at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request on one portion of the display component; and

display a keypad dialer on another portion of the display component.

13 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the display component is a touchscreen component responsive to touch input.

14 . The apparatus of claim 11 , the dialer interface logic to be executed by the processor component to:

display the at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request on one portion of the display component; and

display contact information from a contact database on another portion of the display component, the contact information including at least one contact communication identifier associated with the contact.

15 . The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the contact information includes a default outbound communication identifier associated with the contact such that communication requests made to a contact use the default outbound communication identifier associated with the contact.

16 . The apparatus of claim 15 , the dialer interface logic to be executed by the processor component to:

accept input overriding the default outbound communication identifier and replacing it with one of the other outbound communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request.

17 . A computer implemented method, comprising:

displaying at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with an outbound communication request on a display component under control of the computing device;

receiving input indicating a destination communication identifier;

selecting one of the at least two communication identifiers to be associated with the outbound communication request; and

causing the communication request to be initiated using the selected communication identifier as the outbound communication identifier associated with the communication request.

18 . The computer implemented method of claim 17 , wherein the communication request includes a telephone call communication request, a short message service (SMS) text communication request, a multi-media message service (MMS) communication request, a video chat communication request, and a text chat communication request.

19 . The computer implemented method of claim 18 , wherein the communication identifier includes a telephone number, a social media identifier, and a chat identifier.

20 . The computer implemented method of claim 19 , comprising:

displaying the at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request on one portion of the display component; and

displaying a keypad dialer on another portion of the display component.

21 . The computer implemented method of claim 19 , wherein the display component is a touchscreen component responsive to touch input.

22 . The computer implemented method of claim 19 , comprising:

displaying the at least two communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request on one portion of the display component; and

displaying contact information from a contact database on another portion of the display component, the contact information including at least one contact communication identifier associated with the contact.

23 . The computer implemented method of claim 22 , wherein the contact information includes a default outbound communication identifier associated with the contact such that communication requests made to a contact use the default outbound communication identifier associated with the contact.

24 . The computer implemented method of claim 23 , comprising:

accepting input overriding the default outbound communication identifier; and replacing it with one of the other outbound communication identifiers capable of being associated with a communication request.
