Abstract

An instrument and technique for the removal of epidermal layers in a controlled manner utilizing a hand-held instrument with a working end that (i) a vacuum aspiration system, (ii) a source for delivery of a sterile fluids or pharmacological agents to the skin; and (iii) a skin interface surface in the working end that has specially shape structure for abrading surface layers of the patient's epidermis as the working end is moved over the patient's skin while at the same time causing rapid penetration of the fluids into the skin for therapeutic purposes. Movement of the working end across the skin causes abrasion of the surface layers in a path over the patient's skin.

Claims (31)

1. A method of treating a skin surface of a subject, comprising:

positioning a handheld device against a skin surface of the subject, the handheld device comprising:

a body comprising a housing;

a working end portion positioned along a first end of the body, the working end portion comprising a distal end configured to contact the skin surface, wherein the working end portion comprises a perimeter along the distal end;

a first aperture arrangement comprising at least one first port located along or near the working end portion, the at least one first port being in fluid communication with a vacuum source via at least one passageway; and

a second aperture arrangement comprising at least one second port located along or near the working end portion, the at least one second port being in fluid communication with a treatment media source;

activating the vacuum source to simultaneously deliver a treatment media to the skin surface through the at least second port, wherein the treatment media comprises a liquid, and to aspirate spent treatment media through the at least one first port and the at least one passageway, thereby selectively providing a volume of the treatment media to the skin surface of the subject;

wherein activating the vacuum source facilitates delivery of treatment media to subsurface skin tissue of the subject and causes adjacent skin surface to at least partially puff up to facilitate the treatment method.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when in use, the vacuum source draws skin through an aperture defined by the perimeter of the working end portion to facilitate contact between the working end portion and the skin surface.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one passageway comprises a conduit that extends proximally from the housing of the device to the vacuum source.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one second port is in fluid communication with the treatment media source via a treatment media passageway.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment media source is separate from to the handheld device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment media source comprises a reservoir.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising selecting a reservoir with a desired treatment media and placing said reservoir in fluid communication with the at least one second port of the handheld device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment media comprises at least one of water and saline.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment media comprises a chemical agent.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the chemical agent comprises at least one acid.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the at least one acid comprises at least one of thrichloroacetic acid (TCA), glycolic acid, alphahydroxy acid (AHA), lactic acid, citric acid and phenol.

12. A method of treating a skin surface of a subject, comprising:

positioning a handheld device against a skin surface of the subject, the handheld device comprising a working end portion positioned along a distal end of the handheld device, the working end portion configured to contact the skin surface, wherein the working end portion comprises an outer perimeter configured to contact the skin surface;

wherein the handheld device further comprises a at least one first port and at least one second port located along or near the working end portion, the at least one first port being in fluid communication with a vacuum source, and the at least one second port being in fluid communication with a treatment media source;

activating the vacuum source to simultaneously deliver a treatment media to the skin surface through the at least second port, and to aspirate spent treatment media through the at least one first port, thereby selectively providing a volume of the treatment media to the skin surface of the subject, wherein the treatment media comprises a liquid;

wherein activating the vacuum source facilitates delivery of treatment media to subsurface skin tissue of the subject to facilitate the treatment method.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein, when in use, the vacuum source draws skin through an aperture defined by the perimeter of the working end portion to facilitate contact between the working end portion and the skin surface.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the treatment media source is separate from to the handheld device.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the treatment media source comprises a reservoir.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising selecting a reservoir with a desired treatment media and placing said reservoir in fluid communication with the at least one second port of the handheld device.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the treatment media comprises at least one of water and saline.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the treatment media comprises a chemical agent.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the chemical agent comprises at least one acid.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the at least one acid comprises at least one of thrichloroacetic acid (TCA), glycolic acid, alphahydroxy acid (AHA), lactic acid, citric acid and phenol.
