Abstract

Single filter and multi-filter endolumenal methods and systems for filtering fluids within the body. In some embodiments a blood filtering system captures and removes particulates dislodged or generated during a surgical procedure and circulating in a patient's vasculature. In some embodiments a filter system protects the cerebral vasculature during a cardiac valve repair or replacement procedure.

Claims (31)

1. A method of isolating the cerebral circulation during a procedure, comprising the steps of:

advancing a catheter system through the right subclavian artery, through the aorta, and into the left common carotid artery, the catheter system comprising a control handle having a proximal filter control and a distal filter control, the proximal filter control comprising a sliding control, the distal filter control comprising a distal sheath deflection control and a distal filter sheath handle;

opening a proximal filter within the brachiocephalic artery by withdrawing the sliding control; and

positioning a distal sheath containing a distal filter by axially moving the distal filter control;

deflecting the distal sheath by rotating a distal sheath deflection control relative to the distal filter sheath handle;

opening the distal filter within the left common carotid artery by advancing a distal filter actuator.

2. The method of isolating a cerebral circulation as in claim 1 , wherein each filter has an open end and a closed end; and the open end of each of the proximal and distal filters face the aorta in a deployed orientation.

3. The method of isolating the cerebral circulation as in claim 2 , wherein the procedure comprises a heart valve procedure.

4. The method of isolating the cerebral circulation as in claim 3 , wherein the procedure comprises a transcatheter heart valve replacement procedure.

5. The method of isolating the cerebral circulation as in claim 1 , further comprising deflecting the distal filter to draw a portion of the filter toward a vessel wall.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising resheathing the proximal filter by advancing the sliding control.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising holding the proximal filter control stationary while advancing the distal filter control.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising orienting the distal filter by rotating the distal filter actuator.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retracting the distal filter by withdrawing the distal filter actuator.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein rotating the distal sheath deflection control comprises rotating a screw drive mechanism deflect the distal sheath.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the screw drive mechanism comprises a self-locking screw to prevent the distal sheath from unintentionally deflecting.

12. A method of isolating the cerebral circulation during a procedure, comprising the steps of:

advancing a catheter system through the right subclavian artery, through the aorta, and into the left common carotid artery, the catheter system comprising a control handle having a proximal filter control and a distal filter control, the distal filter control comprising a distal filter sheath handle;

opening a proximal filter within the brachiocephalic artery using the proximal filter control; and

positioning a distal sheath containing a distal filter by axially moving the distal filter control;

after positioning the distal sheath, locking a position of the distal filter control relative to the proximal filter control by locking a proximal filter control lock;

opening the distal filter within the left common carotid artery by advancing a distal filter actuator; and

after opening the distal filter, locking a position of the distal filter relative to the distal filter sheath handle by locking a position of a distal filter control lock.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the distal filter control lock is positioned between the distal filter sheath handle and the distal filter actuator.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the proximal filter control lock is positioned proximal of the proximal filter control.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising deflecting the distal sheath by rotating a distal sheath deflection control of the distal filter control relative to the distal filter sheath handle.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein rotating the distal sheath deflection control comprises rotating a screw drive mechanism deflect the distal sheath.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the screw drive mechanism comprises a self-locking screw to prevent the distal sheath from unintentionally deflecting.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising holding the proximal filter control stationary while advancing the distal filter control.

19. The method of claim 12 , further comprising orienting the distal filter by rotating the distal filter actuator.

20. The method of claim 12 , further comprising retracting the distal filter by withdrawing the distal filter actuator.
