Abstract

Configurations are disclosed for presenting virtual reality and augmented reality experiences to users. The system may comprise an image-generating source to provide one or more frames of image data in a time-sequential manner, a light modulator configured to transmit light associated with the one or more frames of image data, a substrate to direct image information to a user's eye, wherein the substrate houses a plurality of reflectors, a first reflector of the plurality of reflectors to reflect transmitted light associated with a first frame of image data at a first angle to the user's eye, and a second reflector to reflect transmitted light associated with a second frame of the image data at a second angle to the user's eye.

Claims (33)

1. A system, comprising:

a freeform reflective and lens optical component to increase a size of a field-of-view for a defined set of optical parameters,

the freeform reflective and lens optical component comprising a first curved surface, a second curved surface, a third curved surface, and a fourth surface,

wherein the fourth surface at least partially transmits light received by the freeform reflective and lens optical component from an input device via the fourth surface,

wherein the first curved surface at least partially reflects and imparts a focal change to light received by the first curved surface from the fourth surface,

wherein the second curved surface at least partially reflects light received by the second curved surface from the first curved surface toward the third curved surface and passes light received by the second curved surface from the third curved surface,

wherein the third curved surface at least partially reflects light out of the freeform reflective and lens optical component via the second curved surface,

wherein the fourth surface is faced opposite the first curved surface,

wherein the fourth surface is a flat surface, and

wherein the fourth surface is smaller than each of the first curved surface, the second curved surface, and the third curved surface.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second curved surface reflects defined angles of light to be reflected by total internal reflection toward the third curved surface.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the third curved surface bounces light out through the second surface toward a user's eyes.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein a curvature of the freeform reflective and lens optical component corresponds to a parabola.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a compensating lens placed proximate to the first freeform reflective and lens optical component.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising the input device.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the input device is a scanning fiber display.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first curved surface comprises a reflective coating.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the third curved surface adds an opposite stigmatism to cancel a stigmatism added by the first curved surface.

10. A method of increasing a size of a field-of-view for a defined set of optical parameters using a freeform reflective and lens optical component comprising a first curved surface, a second curved surface, a third curved surface, and a fourth surface, the method comprising:

the fourth surface at least partially transmitting light received by the freeform reflective and lens optical component from an input device via the fourth surface,

wherein the first curved surface at least partially reflects and imparts a focal change to light received by the first curved surface from the fourth surface,

the second curved surface at least partially reflecting light received by the second curved surface from the first curved surface toward the third curved surface, and

passing light received by the second curved surface from the third curved surface, and

the third curved surface at least partially reflecting light out of the freeform reflective and lens optical component via the second curved surface,

wherein the fourth surface is faced opposite the first curved surface,

wherein the fourth surface is a flat surface, and

wherein the fourth surface is smaller than each of the first curved surface, the second curved surface, and the third curved surface.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second curved surface reflects defined angles of light to be reflected by total internal reflection toward the third curved surface.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the third curved surface bounces light out through the second surface toward a user's eyes.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein a curvature of the freeform reflective and lens optical component corresponds to a parabola.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising a compensating lens placed proximate to the freeform reflective and lens optical component to prevent light incoming from the real world from being magnified by the freeform reflective and lens optical component.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the input device is a scanning fiber display.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the third curved surface adds an opposite stigmatism to cancel a stigmatism added by the first curved surface.
