Abstract

A waveguide apparatus includes a planar waveguide and at least one optical diffraction element (DOE) that provides a plurality of optical paths between an exterior and interior of the planar waveguide. A phase profile of the DOE may combine a linear diffraction grating with a circular lens, to shape a wave front and produce beams with desired focus. Waveguide apparati may be assembled to create multiple focal planes. The DOE may have a low diffraction efficiency, and planar waveguides may be transparent when viewed normally, allowing passage of light from an ambient environment (e.g., real world) useful in AR systems. Light may be returned for temporally sequentially passes through the planar waveguide. The DOE(s) may be fixed or may have dynamically adjustable characteristics. An optical coupler system may couple images to the waveguide apparatus from a projector, for instance a biaxially scanning cantilevered optical fiber tip.

Claims (23)

1 . A method for interacting with a virtual room, comprising:

displaying the virtual room to the user, the virtual room including a user interface displaying a sporting event;

receiving a user input from a user, the user input relating to the sporting event;

generating virtual content relating to the sporting event based on the received user input;

modifying the virtual room to add the virtual content;

displaying the modified virtual room to the user, including the virtual content.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending the generated virtual content to a user device for display.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user interface displays the sporting event in real-time.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the modified virtual room includes a secondary user interface displaying the virtual content.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual content is a replay of a previously displayed portion of the sporting event.

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising displaying the virtual content from a different angle.

7 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising displaying the virtual content at a different playback speed.

8 . The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the modified virtual room includes a secondary user interface displaying the virtual content,

wherein the virtual content is a second display of the sporting event from a different angle, and

wherein the respective displays on the user interface and the secondary user interfaces are synchronized.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual content is a three-dimensional display.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual content comprises a simulated variation of a previous play in the sporting event.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the simulated variation corresponds to modified play-calling.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the simulated variation corresponds to modified fundamental parameters of the play.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user input is selected from the group consisting of a gesture, visual data, audio data, sensory data, a direct command, a voice command, eye tracking, and selection of a physical button.

14 . The method of claim 1 implemented as a system having means for implementing the method steps.

15 . The method of claim 1 implemented as a computer program product comprising a computer-usable storage medium having executable code to execute the method steps.
