Abstract

A method for facilitating surgery using an augmented reality system, comprises retrieving patient data relating to a surgical procedure on a patient, generating virtual content comprising a virtual three-dimensional (3D) anatomical model based on the patient data, and displaying the virtual content, such that, when viewed by the first user, the virtual 3D anatomical model appears to be fixed at a physical location, whereby the virtual 3D anatomical model may be viewed by the first user from any angle or orientation merely by walking around the physical location.

Claims (21)

1. A method for facilitating surgery using a display device worn on the head of a first user, comprising:

the display device receiving patient data relating to a surgical procedure on a patient;

the display device tracking a head pose of a first user relative to a physical location;

the display device rendering virtual content comprising a virtual three-dimensional (3D) anatomical model based on the received patient data and the tracked head pose of the first user; and

the display device displaying the virtual content while worn on the head of the first user such that the virtual 3D anatomical model, when viewed by the first user, appears to be fixed at the physical location, whereby the virtual 3D anatomical model may be viewed by the first user from any angle or orientation merely by walking around the physical location.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the 3D anatomical model is a 3D heart model.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient data is received from a networked memory.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising another display device worn on the head of a second user displaying the 3D anatomical model to second user that is in a second location different from a first location of the first user.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising the display device displaying a visual representation of the second user to the first user.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the second user is selected from the group consisting of a consulting surgeon, a patient, a party related to the patient, and a medical student.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving user input at the display device;

the display device rendering additional virtual content based on the user input; and

the display device displaying the additional virtual content while worn by the first user while the first user is performing the surgical procedure.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the user input is selected from the group consisting of a gesture, visual data, audio data, sensory data, a direct command, a voice command, eye tracking, and selection of a physical button.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual 3D anatomical model is a pre-mapped 3D anatomical model of the patient.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the display device receiving a set of map points corresponding to the physical location, wherein the virtual 3D anatomical model, when displayed, appears to be fixed to the set of map points.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual content further comprises one of medical images, patient identification information, vital patient sign information, and a medical chart.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the display device is at least partially transparent, such that the first user may view physical objects of the real world through the display device.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the display device comprises at least one planar waveguide into which light is input to generate the virtual content.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the display device is a scanning light display.
