Abstract

The present disclosure relates to the cross-linking of eye tissue. Embodiments of the disclosure relate to the activation of a photosensitizer and/or nanoparticles for the cross-linking of eye tissue.

Claims (17)

1. A device for the cross-linking of eye tissue comprising:

an instrument designed to introduce a photosensitizer and nanoparticles into the eye tissue, and

a laser radiation source configured to emit radiation that is designed to simultaneously activate each of the photosensitizer and the nanoparticles, the laser radiation source also comprising one or more of a Second Harmonic Generation crystal and a Third Harmonic Generation crystal for generating radiation designed to create a channel through an epithelium layer of the eye tissue;

a system for guiding and focusing the laser radiation relative to the eye tissue, and

a computer for controlling the system, wherein the computer is programmed to control the laser radiation to:

first, create at least one channel at least partially through an epithelium layer of the eye tissue,

second, cause the instrument to introduce the photosensitizer and the nanoparticles into the at least one channel through the epithelium layer of the eye tissue, and

third, simultaneously activate each of the photosensitizer and the nanoparticles, wherein the photosensitizer, when activated, achieves cross-linking in the eye tissue, and wherein the nanoparticles, when activated, catalyze cross-linking by the photosensitizer.

2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the laser radiation source is configured to emit UV light.

3. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the laser radiation source is designed to provide light in the wavelength range of 300-1900 nanometers (nm).

4. The device according claim 1 , wherein the photosensitizer is selected from a group consisting of riboflavin (vitamin B2), lysyl oxidase, transglutaminase, sugar aldehydes, ethylcarbodiimide, glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, and mixtures thereof.

5. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the nanoparticles are selected from a group consisting of carbon nanorods, fullerenes, and carbon black nanoparticles.

6. The device according to claim 5 , wherein the nanoparticles have a size in the range of 1-100 nm.

7. A method of cross-linking eye tissue comprising:

creating at least one channel through an epithelium layer of the eye tissue using a laser radiation source configured to emit radiation that is designed to simultaneously activate each of a photosensitizer and a nanoparticles, the laser radiation source also comprising one or more of a Second Harmonic Generation crystal and a Third Harmonic Generation crystal for generating radiation designed to create the at least one channel through the epithelium layer of the eye tissue;

introducing the photosensitizer and the nanoparticles through the at least one channel through an epithelium layer of the eye tissue and into the cornea; and

simultaneously activating both the photosensitizer and the nanoparticles, wherein the photosensitizer, when activated, achieves cross-linking in the eye tissue, and wherein the nanoparticles, when activated, catalyze cross-linking by the photosensitizer.
