Abstract

A rifle scope including a display, at least one optical sensor to capture video of a view area, and image processing circuitry coupled to the display and the at least one optical sensor. The image processing circuitry is configured to select visual elements within a sequence of frames of the video and to align the visual elements within adjacent frames of the sequence of frames to produce a video output corresponding to the view area that is stabilized relative to a target. The image processing circuit is configured to provide the video output to the display.

Claims (47)

1. A rifle scope comprising:

a display;

at least one optical sensor to capture video of a view area; and

image processing circuitry coupled to the display and the at least one optical sensor, the image processing circuitry configured to compress each frame of a sequence of frames of the video, to select visual elements within the compressed frames, to align the visual elements within adjacent ones of the compressed frames of the sequence of compressed frames, and to decompress the frames to produce a video output corresponding to the view area that is stabilized relative to a target.

2. The rifle scope of claim 1 , wherein the image processing circuitry includes a field programmable gate array (FPGA) circuit.

3. The rifle scope of claim 1 , wherein the image processing circuitry provides at least a portion of the video to the display.

4. The rifle scope of claim 2 , wherein the at least the portion of the video provided to the display is less than an entirety of the video captured by the at least one optical sensor.

5. The rifle scope of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one motion sensor to generate a signal representing movement of the rifle scope; and

a microcontroller unit (MCU) coupled to the at least one motion sensor and to the image processing circuitry, the MCU configured to determine the movement of the rifle scope relative to the view area based on the signal.

6. The rifle scope of claim 5 , wherein the at least one motion sensor comprises at least one of a gyroscopic sensor, an inclinometer, and an accelerometer.

7. The rifle scope of claim 5 , wherein the MCU is configured to compare the movement to a threshold.

8. The rifle scope of claim 7 , wherein, in response to the comparison, the image processing circuitry is configured to:

align first selected elements from a first frame to second selected elements in a next frame to produce the stabilized video when the movement is less than the threshold, the first selected elements and the second selected elements corresponding to the selected visual elements within the compressed frames; and

selectively align one or more visual elements from the first frame to the one or more visual elements in the next frame to produce the stabilized video when the movement is greater than the threshold.

9. A rifle scope comprising:

at least one optical sensor configured to capture video of a view area; and

an image processing circuit coupled to the at least one optical sensor, the image processing circuit to:

compress each frame of a sequence of frames of the video;

select visual elements within the compressed frames;

selectively align the visual elements from frame to frame within the sequence of compressed frames; and

decompress the compressed frames to produce a video output corresponding to the view area that is stabilized relative to a target.

10. The rifle scope of claim 9 , wherein at least some of the visual elements correspond to objects within a video frame that have one or more detectable differences relative to adjacent objects within the selected video frame.

11. The rifle scope of claim 9 , wherein the image processing circuitry is configured to compress each frame through one or more compression operations.

12. The rifle scope of claim 9 , further comprising:

a display coupled to the image processing circuitry; and

wherein the image processing circuitry provides at least a portion of the video to the display.

13. The rifle scope of claim 12 , wherein the at least the portion of the video provided to the display is less than an entirety of the video captured by the at least one optical sensor.

14. The rifle scope of claim 9 , further comprising:

at least one motion sensor to generate a signal representing movement of the rifle scope; and

a microcontroller unit (MCU) coupled to the at least one motion sensor and to the image processing circuitry, the MCU configured to determine the movement of the rifle scope relative to the view area based on the signal.

15. The rifle scope of claim 14 , wherein the image processing circuitry is configured to:

align first selected elements from a first frame to second selected elements in a next frame to produce the stabilized video when the movement is less than a threshold movement, the first selected elements and the second selected elements corresponding to the selected visual elements within the compressed frames; and

selectively align one or more visual elements from the first frame to the one or more visual elements in the next frame to produce the stabilized video when the movement is greater than the threshold.

16. A method comprising:

compressing, using image processing circuitry of a rifle scope, each frame of a sequence of frames of a video from at least one optical sensor of the rifle scope to produce a sequence of compressed frames;

selectively aligning selected visual elements from one compressed frame to a next compressed frame in the sequence of compressed frames using the image processing circuitry;

decompressing the frames using the image processing circuitry to produce a video output corresponding to the view area that is stabilized relative to a target; and

providing the video output from the image processing circuitry to a display of the rifle scope.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein, before selectively aligning the selected visual elements, the method further comprising:

determining movement associated with the rifle scope from one or more motion sensors; and

comparing the movement to a threshold.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

aligning the selected visual elements from a first frame to the selected visual elements in a next frame to produce the stabilized video when the movement is less than the threshold; and

selectively align one or more selected visual elements from the first frame to the one or more selected visual elements in the next frame to produce the stabilized video when the movement is greater than the threshold.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein selectively aligning the selected visual elements comprises selectively shifting a displayed portion of the video provided to the display by aligning the selected visual elements corresponding to static objects within adjacent frames of the sequence of frames to produce the video output that is stabilized relative to the target.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein, before selectively aligning the selected visual elements, the method further comprises automatically identifying the visual elements within the sequence of frames by identifying groups of pixels within a frame of the sequence of frames that have one or more detectable differences relative to neighboring pixels within the frame.
