Multifunctional biocomposite additive compositions and methods
View Patent ↗Biocomposite compositions and compositions, which include dried distillers solubles, and which can be used in making biocomposite compositions are described. Methods for preparing the compositions are also described.
1. A biopolymer comprising:
0.01 wt. % to about 95 wt. % of a thermoactive material comprising polylactic acid, polybutyrate adipate terephthalate, and combinations thereof; and
a biocomposite additive comprising a post ethanol fermentation byproduct consisting essentially of dried distiller's solubles.
2. The biopolymer of claim 1 , wherein the thermoactive material comprising the polylactic acid, the polybutyrate adipate terephthalate, and the combinations thereof is at 60 wt % to 95 wt %, and the biocomposite additive is at 0.5 to 40 wt %.

The biopolymer of claim 1 , wherein the biocomposite additive further comprises catalysts, fibers, crosslinkers, binders, proteins, natural biopolymers, minerals, impact modifiers, thermal stabilizers, lubricants, plasticizers, organic and inorganic pigments, biocides, processing aids, flame retardants, antioxidants, antistatic agents, delustering agents, coloring agents, aromatic agents, anti-aging agents, fluorescent brightening agents, ultraviolet absorbers, ultraviolet stabilizers, slip additives, chain extenders, viscosity stabilizers, emulsifiers, and combinations thereof.
4. The biopolymer of claim 1 , wherein the biocomposite additive further comprises an impact agent comprising acrylic, acrylonitrile-butadiene (ABS), acrylic copolymer, chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), and mixtures thereof.

The biopolymer of claim 3 , wherein the fibers comprise wood fibers, agricultural fibers, flax fibers, hemp fibers, kenaf fibers, wheat fibers, soybean fibers, switchgrass fibers, grass fibers, fibrous waste from the paper or wood industries, fiberglass fibers, aramid fibers, carbon fibers, nylon, or combinations thereof.
6. The biopolymer of claim 1 , wherein the biopolymer further comprises 0.001 to 40% fibers.

The biopolymer of claim 3 , wherein the inorganic pigments comprise calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, aluminum oxide, silicon oxide, iron oxide, boron nitride, titanium oxide, talc, pyrophyllite clay, silicate pigment, polishing powder, mica, sericite, bentonite, pearlite, zeolite, wollastonite, fluorite, dolomite, quick lime, slaked lime, kaolin, chlorite or diatomaceous earth.
8. The biopolymer of claim 1 , wherein the biocomposite additive is in a granular form.
9. The biopolymer of claim 1 , wherein the biocomposite additive is in a powder form.
10. The biopolymer of claim 1 , wherein the biocomposite additive is in a pellet form.
11. The biopolymer of claim 1 , wherein the thermoactive material further comprises polyamide, polyolefin polybutene, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylate, polyacetate, polystyrenes, styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) polymer, polysulfone, halogenated polymers, ethylene-propylene copolymer, ethylene-hexylene copolymer, ethylene-methacrylate copolymer, ethylene-methacrylate copolymer, or mixtures thereof.
12. The biopolymer of claim 1 , wherein the biocomposite additive has a moisture content of 0.5% to 15% by weight.
