Downhole tool and method of use
A composite member for a downhole tool that includes a resilient portion; and a deformable portion having at least one groove formed therein, wherein the resilient portion and the deformable portion are made of a first material, and wherein a second material is disposed around the deformable portion and at least partially fills into the at least one groove.
1. A composite member for a downhole tool comprising:
a resilient portion; and
a deformable portion having at least one groove formed therein, wherein the resilient portion and the deformable portion are made of a first material, wherein a second material is bonded to the deformable portion and at least partially fills into the at least one groove, wherein the downhole tool is selected from a group consisting of a frac plug and a bridge plug, and wherein the second material comprises at least one of an elastomer, polyurethane, and silicone.
2. The composite member of claim 1 , wherein the first material comprises one of filament wound material, fiberglass cloth wound material, and molded fiberglass composite.
3. The composite member of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove comprises constant pitch along an axis of the composite member.
4. The composite member of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove comprises varying pitch along an axis of the composite member.
5. The composite member of claim 1 , wherein the deformable portion comprises an outer surface, an inner surface, a top edge, and a bottom edge, wherein a depth of at least one groove extends from the outer surface to the inner surface, and wherein the at least one groove is formed from about the bottom edge to about the top edge.
6. A downhole tool useable for isolating sections of a wellbore, the downhole tool comprising:
a mandrel;
a composite member disposed about the mandrel and in engagement with a seal element also disposed about the mandrel, wherein the composite member is made of a first material and comprises a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion comprises an outer surface, an inner surface, a top, and a bottom, wherein a depth of at least one groove extends from the outer surface to the inner surface, and wherein the at least one groove is formed between about the bottom to about the top.
7. The downhole tool of claim 6 , wherein a second material is formed around the first portion, and at least partially fills into a portion of the at least one groove.
8. The downhole tool of claim 7 further comprising a second composite member also made of the first material also disposed about the mandrel, and further comprising an another groove, and the second material at least partially filled into a portion of the another groove.
9. The downhole tool of claim 6 , the downhole tool further comprising:
a first slip;
a first cone;
a bearing plate;
a lower sleeve;
a second slip; and
a second cone.
10. A downhole tool useable for isolating sections of a wellbore, the downhole tool comprising:
a mandrel made of a composite material;
a composite member disposed about the mandrel, wherein the composite member further comprises a resilient portion, and a deformable portion having at least one groove formed therein, wherein the resilient portion and the deformable portion are made of a first material, wherein a second material is at least partially disposed into the at least one groove and around the deformable portion, wherein the deformable portion comprises an outer surface, an inner surface, a top, and a bottom, wherein a depth of at least one groove extends from the outer surface to the inner surface, and wherein the at least one groove is formed between about the bottom to about the top.
11. The downhole tool of claim 10 further comprising a second composite member disposed around the mandrel, the second composite member further comprising a second member resilient portion, and a second member deformable portion, each being made of the same first material as the composite member.
12. The downhole tool of claim 10 , the downhole tool further comprising being disposed about and in engagement with the mandrel:
a first slip;
a first cone;
a bearing plate;
a lower sleeve;
a sealing element;
a second slip; and
a second cone.
13. The downhole tool of claim 12 , wherein the composite material comprises filament winding, and wherein one or both of the first slip and the second slip comprise a one-piece configuration.
14. The downhole tool of claim 10 , wherein the first material comprises one of filament wound material, fiberglass cloth wound material, and molded fiberglass composite.
15. The downhole tool of claim 10 , wherein the downhole tool is selected from a group consisting of a frac plug and a bridge plug.
16. The downhole tool of claim 10 , wherein the mandrel comprises a set of shear threads configured for engagement with a setting tool, and a set of rounded threads configured for engagement with a lower sleeve.
17. A composite member for a downhole tool comprising:
a resilient portion; and
a deformable portion having at least one groove formed therein, wherein the resilient portion and the deformable portion are made of a first material, wherein a second material is bonded to the deformable portion and at least partially fills into the at least one groove, wherein the deformable portion comprises an outer surface, an inner surface, a top edge, and a bottom edge, wherein a depth of at least one groove extends from the outer surface to the inner surface, and wherein the at least one groove is formed from about the bottom edge to about the top edge.
18. A downhole tool useable for isolating sections of a wellbore, the downhole tool comprising:
a mandrel;
a first slip;
a first cone;
a bearing plate;
a lower sleeve;
a second slip;
a second cone; and
a composite member disposed about the mandrel and in engagement with a seal element also disposed about the mandrel, wherein the composite member is made of a first material and comprises a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion comprises an outer surface, an inner surface, a top, and a bottom.
19. A downhole tool useable for isolating sections of a wellbore, the downhole tool comprising:
a mandrel made of a composite material, wherein the mandrel comprises a set of shear threads configured for engagement with a setting tool, and a set of rounded threads configured for engagement with a lower sleeve; and
a composite member disposed about the mandrel, wherein the composite member further comprises a resilient portion, and a deformable portion having at least one groove formed therein, wherein the resilient portion and the deformable portion are made of a first material, and wherein a second material is at least partially disposed into the at least one groove and around the deformable portion.
