Abstract

A golf club head includes a face, a club head body, and a hosel. The hosel has a tubular hosel body extending along a longitudinal axis and defining a bore. The bore is configured to receive a golf club shaft or a shaft adapter. The tubular hosel body is molded from a polymeric material that includes a resin and a plurality of fibers, each fiber has a length of from about 0.01 mm to about 12 mm.

Claims (24)

1. A method of manufacturing a polymeric hosel for a golf club head of a golf club having a shaft or a shaft adapter, or both, the method comprising:

molding a tubular hosel body from a polymeric material comprising a resin and a plurality of discontinuous fibers embedded within the resin;

wherein the molded tubular hosel body has a longitudinal axis and defines a bore with a central longitudinal axis and an opening configured to receive the shaft or the shaft adapter;

wherein the tubular hosel body includes injecting the polymeric material into a mold such that the polymeric material flows from a first end of the tubular hosel body to a second end of the tubular hosel body; and

gating the mold at the first end of the tubular hosel body such that a mold flow of the polymeric material is parallel with the central longitudinal axis such that at least 50% of the plurality of discontinuous fibers being parallel to or oriented within about 30 degrees of parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tubular hosel body; and

wherein the tubular hosel body is in communication with a body of the golf club head.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of discontinuous fibers has a length of from about 0.01 mm to about 12 mm.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising venting the mold at the second end of the tubular hosel body.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the second end of the tubular hosel body defines an opening that permits the shaft or the shaft adapter to be inserted into the bore.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the molding is performed such that at least 70% of the plurality of discontinuous fibers are oriented within about 20 degrees of parallel to the longitudinal axis.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising molding the body of the golf club head from the polymeric material such that the club head body is integrally formed with the tubular hosel body.

7. A method of manufacturing a polymeric hosel for a golf club, the golf club having a golf club head and a golf club shaft or a shaft adapter, or both, the method comprising:

molding a tubular hosel body from a polymeric material such that the tubular hosel body defines a bore with a central longitudinal axis and an opening configured to receive and attach to the golf club shaft or the shaft adapter, the polymeric material including a thermoplastic resin embedded with a plurality of discontinuous short fibers, wherein molding the tubular hosel body includes injecting the polymeric material into a mold such that the polymeric material flows from a first end of the tubular hosel body to a second end of the tubular hosel body; and

venting the mold at the second end of the tubular hosel body such that at least 70% of the plurality of discontinuous short fibers are parallel to or oriented within about 20 degrees of parallel to the central longitudinal axis of the bore.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising gating the mold at the first end of the tubular hosel body such that a mold flow of the polymeric material is parallel with the central longitudinal axis of the bore.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the molding is performed such that at least 60% of the plurality of discontinuous short fibers are orientated within about 20 degrees of parallel to the longitudinal axis.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein each of the plurality of discontinuous short fibers has a length of from about 0.01 mm to about 12 mm.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the polymeric material comprises a resin content from about 40% to about 90% by weight.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the polymeric material comprises a resin content from about 55% to about 70% by weight.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the thermoplastic resin is a thermoplastic polyamide.

14. The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of discontinuous short fibers are chopped carbon fibers.

15. The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of discontinuous short fibers are chopped glass fibers.

16. The method of claim 7 , wherein the bore of the tubular hosel body comprises a diameter from about 8 mm to about 9 mm.

17. The method of claim 7 , splines are integrally molded with the tubular hosel body.
