Abstract

A system for ablation and removal of occlusions from blood vessels is provided. Laser cutting systems and mechanical cutting systems are provided in catheter devices, the cutting systems operable to ablate, cut, dislodge, and otherwise remove occlusions within a blood vessel that may limit or prevent proper circulation. Aspiration systems are further provided, the aspiration systems operable to remove ablated, cut, or dislodged material through a primary orifice at the distal end of the catheter and/or through an auxiliary orifice, which may be on the side of the catheter.

Claims (38)

1. A catheter aspiration system comprising:

a catheter having a tubular wall, the tubular wall comprising:

a distal end;

an orifice for an inner lumen extending proximally from the distal end of the catheter; and

an opening in the tubular wall, wherein the opening is disposed in the exterior proximal of the distal end of the catheter;

a plurality of optical fibers located within the tubular wall and exposed at the distal end of the catheter, wherein the plurality of optical fibers comprise corresponding distal ends, wherein the distal ends of the plurality of optical fibers are disposed distally of the opening in the tubular wall;

a vacuum pump in fluid communication with the inner lumen and operable to transmit material proximally through the inner lumen; and

an adjustable gate being movable to selectively cover at least a portion of the opening.

2. The catheter aspiration system of claim 1 , wherein the opening in the tubular wall extends to the inner lumen.

3. The catheter aspiration system of claim 2 , wherein the adjustable gate is disposed within the inner lumen.

4. The catheter aspiration system of claim 1 , wherein the catheter further comprises a second lumen extending toward the proximal end, wherein the opening is coupled to the second lumen.

5. The catheter aspiration system of claim 4 , wherein the inner lumen and the second lumen are coupled to the vacuum pump.

6. The catheter aspiration system of claim 4 , further comprising a second vacuum pump coupled to the second lumen.

7. The catheter aspiration system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a valve assembly in communication with the vacuum pump, the valve assembly having an open position and closed position; and

a controller for alternating the position of the valve assembly between the open position and the closed position.

8. The catheter aspiration system of claim 7 , wherein the valve assembly comprises a solenoid valve.

9. The catheter aspiration system of claim 7 , wherein controller comprises a pulse width modulator.

10. The catheter aspiration system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of optical fibers exposed at the distal end of the catheter are configured in an extending helical configuration.

11. The catheter aspiration system of claim 1 , further comprising:

clogging detection means which detects clogging in at least one of the aspiration catheter and an aspiration tube during an aspiration operation, the clogging detection means comprising at least one of pressure sensor and a flow meter for sensing at least one a pressure differential and a flow differential with respect to preferred operating conditions; and

clogging alert means comprising at least one of an audio and a visual indicia when the clogging detection means detects clogging based on the at least one of a pressure differential and a flow differential with respect to preferred operating conditions.

12. The catheter aspiration system of claim 11 , wherein the distal end of the catheter further comprises a sharp cutting surface.

13. The catheter aspiration system of claim 12 , wherein the sharp cutting surface is aligned with a longitudinal axis of the catheter.

14. The catheter aspiration system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of optical fibers exposed at the distal end are aligned with a longitudinal axis of the catheter.

15. The catheter aspiration system of claim 14 , wherein the distal end of the catheter further comprises a sharp cutting surface.

16. The catheter aspiration system of claim 15 , wherein the sharp cutting surface is configured in an extending helical configuration.

17. The catheter aspiration system of claim 1 , further comprising a means for moving the adjustable gate.

18. The catheter aspiration system of claim 17 , wherein the means for moving the adjustable gate is a rod.

19. The catheter aspiration system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustable gate is slidable relative to the tubular wall of the catheter to selectively cover at least a portion of the opening.

20. A catheter aspiration system comprising:

a catheter having a tubular wall, the tubular wall comprising:

a distal end;

an orifice for an inner lumen extending proximally from the distal end;

an opening in the tubular wall, wherein the opening is disposed in the exterior proximal of the distal end;

a plurality of optical fibers located within the tubular wall and exposed at the distal end of the catheter;

a vacuum pump in fluid communication with the inner lumen; and

an adjustable gate being movable to selectively cover at least a portion of the opening, wherein the adjustable gate is hingedly movable relative to the tubular wall of the catheter to selectively cover at least a portion of the opening.
