Abstract

A method of manufacturing a multi-piece shaft for an idler roller. The method includes providing a tube having a first end and a second end, mechanically crimping the first end of the tube to a first stub to secure the first stub to the first end of the tube with a mechanical interlock, and mechanically crimping the second end of the tube to a second stub to secure the second stub to the second end of the tube with a mechanical interlock. The first stub extends from the first end of the tube and the second stub extends from the second end of the tube.

Claims (44)

1. A method of manufacturing a multi-piece shaft for an idler roller, the method comprising:

providing a tube having a first end and a second end;

mechanically crimping the first end of the tube to a first stub to secure the first stub to the first end of the tube with a mechanical interlock, the first stub extending from the first end; and

mechanically crimping the second end of the tube to a second stub to secure the second stub to the second end of the tube with a mechanical interlock, the second stub extending from the second end.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein

mechanically crimping the first end of the tube to the first stub includes depressing the tube in an area that overlays a groove of the first stub such that a portion of a diameter of the tube becomes substantially equal to a diameter of the groove of the first stub, and

mechanically crimping the second end of the tube to the second stub includes depressing the tube in an area that overlays a groove of the second stub such that a portion of the diameter of the tube becomes substantially equal to a diameter of the groove of the second stub.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the tube includes straightening the tube.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the tube includes cutting the tube to a first length.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising defining a length of the shaft, the length of the shaft including a portion of a length of the first stub, a portion of a length of the second stub, and the first length of the tube.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising aligning the first stub and the second stub along an axis of the tube.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising coupling at least one flexible tube to at least one of the first or the second stub, the flexible tube configured to allow grease to pass therethrough.

8. A method of manufacturing a multi-piece shaft for an idler roller, the method comprising:

providing a tube defining an axis and having a first end and a second end;

aligning a first stub along the axis of the tube adjacent to the first end of the tube;

aligning a second stub along the axis of the tube adjacent to the second end of the tube;

inserting the first stub into the first end of the tube, the first stub including a first diameter, a groove having a second diameter, and an attachment configuration;

inserting the second stub into the second end of the tube, the second stub including a first diameter, a groove having a second diameter, and an attachment configuration;

depressing the tube in an area of the groove of the first stub such that a portion of a diameter of the tube becomes substantially equal to the second diameter of the first stub; and

depressing the tube in an area of the groove of the second stub such that a portion of the diameter of the tube becomes substantially equal to the second diameter of the second stub.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein providing the tube includes straightening the tube.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein providing the tube includes cutting the tube to a first length.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising defining a length of the shaft, the length of the shaft including a portion of a length of the first stub, a portion of a length of the second stub, and the first length of the tube.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising coupling at least one flexible tube to at least one of the first or the second stub, the flexible tube configured to allow grease to pass therethrough.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein aligning the first stub and the second stub along the axis of the tube includes simultaneously lifting the first stub and the second stub to the axis of the tube such that the first stub and the second stub are coaxial with the tube.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein inserting the first stub into the first end of the tube and the second stub into the second end of the tube includes simultaneously positioning the groove of the first stub within the first end of the tube and the groove of the second stub within the second end of the of the tube.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising transferring the tube, the first stub, and the second stub to a crimping machine.

16. A method of manufacturing an idler roller assembly, the method comprising:

assembling a first multi-piece shaft and a second multi-piece shaft, each of the first and the second multi-piece shafts including a first stub and a second stub that are mechanically interlocked to opposite ends of a tube;

coupling the first multi-piece shaft to a first roller;

coupling the second multi-piece shaft to a second roller; and

coupling the first roller and the second roller to a frame;

wherein assembling each of the first multi-piece and the second multi-piece shafts includes mechanically crimping a first end of the tube to the first stub and mechanically crimping a second end of the tube to the second stub.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein assembling each of the first multi-piece and the second multi-piece shafts includes:

inserting the first stub into a first end of the tube, the first stub including a first diameter, a groove having a second diameter, and an attachment configuration;

inserting the second stub into a second end of the tube, the second stub including a first diameter, a groove having a second diameter, and an attachment configuration;

depressing the tube in an area of the groove of the first stub such that a portion of a diameter of the tube becomes substantially equal to the second diameter of the first stub; and

depressing the tube in an area of the groove of the second stub such that a portion of the diameter of the tube becomes substantially equal to the second diameter of the second stub.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein assembling each of the first multi-piece and the second multi-piece shafts includes:

straightening the tube;

cutting the tube to a first length;

aligning the first stub and second stub along an axis of the tube; and

defining a length of the shaft, the length of the shaft including a portion of a length of the first stub, a portion of a length of the second stub, and the first length of the tube.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising coupling at least one flexible tube between the first multi-piece shaft and the second multi-piece shaft, the flexible tube configured to allow grease to pass therethrough for lubricating the first roller and the second roller.
