Abstract

An energy delivery probe and method of using the energy delivery probe to treat a patient is provided herein. The energy delivery probe has at least one probe body having a longitudinal axis and at least a first trocar and a second trocar. Each trocar comprises at least two electrodes that are electrically insulated from each other, and each electrode is independently selectively activatable. An insulative sleeve is positioned in a coaxially surrounding relationship to each of the first trocar and the second trocar. The probe also has a switching means for independently activating at least one electrode. The method involves independently and selectively activating the first and second electrodes to form an ablation zone, then repeating the ablation by delivering energy to a second set of electrodes, producing one or more overlapping ablation zone, and eliminating the need to reposition the ablation probes.

Claims (13)

1. An energy delivery probe for treating a patient, comprising:

a first shaft and a second shaft, each having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the distal end is capable of piercing tissue, wherein each shaft comprises at least a first electrode and a second electrode that are electrically insulated from each other, wherein each electrode is independently selectively activatable, and

an insulative sleeve positioned in a coaxially surrounding relationship to at least a portion of each of the first shaft and the second shaft.

2. The probe of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the insulative sleeves is axially adjustable along the length of at least one of the shafts.

3. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the probe comprises a switching means coupled to at least one of the electrodes for independently activating at least one electrode.

4. The probe of claim 1 , further comprising at least one anchoring means positioned at the distal end of at least one of the trocars, wherein the anchoring means is deployable from the distal end of at least one of the shafts to anchor the probe in relation to the tissue.

5. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the first shaft is substantially parallel the second shaft.

6. The probe of claim 1 , wherein at least one electrode on the first shaft is substantially parallel to at least one electrode on the second shaft.

7. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the probe further comprises a handle coupled to the proximal end of each of the shafts.

8. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the probe further comprises a plurality of electrodes on each of the first shaft and the second shaft.

9. The probe of claim 1 , wherein at least one electrode on the first shaft is staggered relative to at least one electrode on the second shaft.

10. The probe of claim 3 , further comprising an energy source to delivery energy to the switched electrodes.

11. The probe of claim 10 , wherein the probe is not repositioned during the delivery of energy.
