Abstract

A cryoprobe for use in cryosurgery and other applications comprising a rigid outer tube, an inner coolant inlet tube. a short rigid penetrating segment extending distally from the distal end of the outer tube and a helical-shaped baffle having a heating element disposed about the outer surface of the inlet tube. The baffle is adapted to produce turbulent fluid flow improving heat transfer and is able to warm target tissue during rapid freezing and thawing cycles.

Claims (12)

1. A method of performing cryogenic surgery comprising the steps of:

providing a cryoprobe comprising:

a rigid outer tube having an inner diameter and proximal and distal ends;

a coolant inlet tube having a proximal section and a distal section, disposed within the rigid outer tube;

a short rigid penetrating segment extending distally from the distal end of the rigid outer tube; and

a helical-shaped baffle having a heating element disposed about a distal outer surface of the coolant inlet tube, said baffle disposed about the distal section of the coolant inlet tube and terminating proximal of a distal tip of the penetrating segment;

placing the coolant inlet tube in fluid communication with a pressurized liquid nitrogen source by means of an inlet pressure fitting;

supplying the liquid nitrogen from the pressurized liquid nitrogen source to the cryoprobe through the inlet pressure fitting, which flows through a fluid supply line, flows through the coolant inlet tube and exits the distal end of the coolant inlet tube;

exhausting the liquid nitrogen from the pressurized liquid nitrogen source so that it flows over the outside of the coolant inlet tube and the helical baffle;

placing the short rigid penetrating segment against a target tissue to be cooled; and

flowing the liquid nitrogen fluid past the outer surface of the coolant inlet tube and placing the coolant inlet tube in contact with the helical-shaped baffle creating a turbulent helical flow path and forcing the liquid nitrogen towards the inner surface of the outer rigid tube.

2. The method of claim 1 further providing the step of providing a means for heating the targeted tissue within the cryoprobe.
