Abstract

Methods and apparatus to provide packet switched service continuity during circuit switched fallback operation are described. One example method includes determining a set of access technologies available to a User Equipment (UE); identifying a WLAN access network from the set of access technologies; identifying a 3GPP RAT from the set of access technologies; prioritizing the WLAN access network type with respect to types of 3GPP RAT; and selecting one access technology from amongst the identified WLAN access network and the 3GPP RAT according to the prioritizing.

Claims (31)

1. A method comprising:

determining a set of access technologies available to a User Equipment (UE);

identifying a WLAN access network from said set of access technologies;

identifying a 3GPP RAT from said set of access technologies;

prioritizing the WLAN access network type with respect to types of 3GPP RAT for a user plane handover during a circuit switch fall back (CSFB) procedure based at least in part on a target RAT in the CSFB procedure; and

during the CSFB procedure, selecting one access technology from amongst said identified WLAN access network and said 3GPP RAT according to said prioritizing for the user plane handover.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

handing over user plane traffic to the selected access technology.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the user plane traffic is an IP flow.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the IP flow is identified by an IP 5-tuple.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the IP flow is identified by an Access Point Name (APN).

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the user plane traffic is associated with a specific APN.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the 3GPP RAT comprises E-UTRA, UTRA or GERAN.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE determines the prioritized access technology type using a prioritized list of access technology types that are provided in an Access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF) management object.

9. The method of claim 2 , wherein said handing over occurs after recognizing a handover event that changes said set of access technologies available to the UE.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said prioritizing is based on a predetermined preference.

11. A user equipment (UE) method comprising:

identifying a WLAN access network;

identifying a 3GPP RAT;

prioritizing said WLAN access network with respect to said 3GPP RAT for a user plane handover during a circuit switch fall back (CSFB) procedure based at least in part on a target RAT in the CSFB procedure; and

during the CSFB procedure, selecting one access technology for routing user plane traffic from amongst said WLAN access network and 3GPP RAT according to said prioritizing.

12. The UE method of claim 11 , further comprising:

indicating to a backhaul network the user plane handover.

13. The UE method of claim 11 , wherein the UE prioritizes based on a prioritized list of access technology types that are provided in an Access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF) management object.

14. The UE method of claim 11 , further comprising:

handing over said user plane traffic to the selected access technology.

15. The UE method of claim 14 , wherein the user plane traffic is an IP flow.

16. The UE method of claim 11 , wherein the 3GPP RAT comprises E-UTRA, UTRA or GERAN.

17. The UE method of claim 14 , wherein said handing over occurs after:

recognizing a handover event that changes at least one of WLAN access network or said 3GPP RAT.

18. The UE method of claim 11 , wherein said prioritizing is based on a predetermined preference.
