Abstract

An eyepiece for a head mounted display (“HMD”) includes a doublet lens that includes a first optical element and a second optical element. The first optical element has an entry surface to receive the display light from a micro display and a first coupling surface. The second optical element has an exit surface and a second coupling surface paired to the first coupling surface of the first optical element. The doublet lens is configured to direct the display light through the first coupling surface, the second coupling surface, and through the exit surface.

Claims (29)

1. An eyepiece for a head mounted display (“HMD”), the eyepiece comprising:

a doublet lens including:

a first optical element having an entry surface to receive display light from a micro display and a first coupling surface, wherein the first optical element has a first Abbe number; and

a second optical element having an exit surface and a second coupling surface paired with the first coupling surface of the first optical element, wherein the second optical element has a second Abbe number different from the first Abbe number, wherein the doublet lens is configured to direct the display light to propagate along an optical path through the first coupling surface, through the second coupling surface, and propagate through the exit surface, in that order; and

a reflecting element disposed along a surface of the second optical element to reflect the display light received through the second coupling surface to the exit surface, wherein the reflecting element folds the optical path within the second optical element between the second coupling surface and the exit surface.

2. The eyepiece of claim 1 , wherein the first coupling surface is a convex surface, and wherein the second coupling surface is a concave surface that complements the convex surface.

3. The eyepiece of claim 1 , wherein the entry surface has a first curvature having a first optical power, and wherein the first optical power is a negative optical power.

4. The eyepiece of claim 1 , wherein the exit surface has a second curvature having a second optical power, and wherein the second optical power is a positive optical power.

5. The eyepiece of claim 1 , wherein the first optical element includes polycarbonate having a first index of refraction and the first Abbe number, and wherein the second optical element includes E48R having the first index of refraction and the second Abbe number.

6. The eyepiece of claim 1 , wherein the first Abbe number and the second Abbe number are widely separate Abbe numbers.

7. The eyepiece of claim 1 , wherein the first coupling surface and the second coupling surface are coupled together with optical cement.

8. A head mounted display (“HMD”), comprising:

a micro display for launching display light;

a doublet lens including:

a first optical element having an entry surface to receive the display light from a micro display and a first coupling surface, wherein the first optical element has a first Abbe number; and

a second optical element having an exit surface and a second coupling surface paired with the first coupling surface of the first optical element, wherein the second optical element has a second Abbe number different from the first Abbe number, and wherein the doublet lens is configured to direct the display light to propagate along an optical path through the first coupling surface, through the second coupling surface, and propagate through the exit surface, in that order; and

a reflecting element disposed along a surface of the second optical element to reflect the display light received through the second coupling surface to the exit surface, wherein the reflecting element folds the optical path within the second optical element between the second coupling surface and the exit surface.

9. The HMD of claim 8 , wherein the first coupling surface is a convex surface, and wherein the second coupling surface is a concave surface that complements the convex surface.

10. The HMD of claim 8 , wherein the entry surface has a first curvature having a first optical power, and wherein the first optical power is a negative optical power.

11. The HMD of claim 8 , wherein the exit surface has second curvature having a second optical power, and wherein the second optical power is a positive optical power.

12. The HMD of claim 8 , wherein the first Abbe number and the second Abbe number are widely separate Abbe numbers.

13. A head mounted display (“HMD”), comprising:

a securing means for securing the HMD to a head of a user;

a display means for launching display light;

a doublet lensing means for directing the display light to an eye of the user, the doublet lensing means including:

a first optical element having a first coupling surface and an entry surface to receive the display light from a micro display; and

a second optical element having an exit surface and a second coupling surface paired with the first coupling surface of the first optical element; and

a reflecting means for reflecting the display light, wherein the doublet lensing means and the reflecting means are configured to direct the display light to propagate along an optical path through the entry surface, through the first coupling surface, through the second coupling surface, reflect off the reflecting means, and propagate through the exit surface, in that order.

14. The HMD of claim 13 , wherein the reflecting means is disposed on a surface of the second optical element.
