Abstract

Pigment based particles in powder form intended to be used as colorants in a digital print formed by applying dry colorants on a surface, bonding a part of the colorants with a binder and removing the non-bonded colorants from the surface. A panel with a surface including a digitally formed print of macro colorants including a particle body and colour pigments attached to the surface of the particle body is also described. The colorants are arranged in patterns with pigments on an upper and lower surface of the particle body.

Claims (22)

1. Dry ink comprising macro colourant particles for bonding to a liquid print applied on a surface by a digital drop application head, wherein the macro colourant particles each comprise:

a particle body;

a dry resin bonded to the particle body; and

colour pigments bonded to the particle body,

wherein the dry resin is adapted to bond pigments to the particle body and to bond the macro colourant particle by the liquid print to the surface.

2. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein liquid print comprises at least one of water, glycol, and glycerine.

3. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the macro colourant particles have a diameter or length larger than 20 microns.

4. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the particle body is a mineral particle or a fibre or a thermosetting resin.

5. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the particle body is an aluminium oxide particle.

6. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the particle body is a wood fibre.

7. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the particle body is coated with a thermosetting resin.

8. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the dry resin is a melamine formaldehyde resin.

9. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the macro colourant particle is coated with a first layer that bonds the colour pigments to the particle body and a second layer comprising the dry resin and applied on the first layer.

10. A method of bonding a dry ink to a surface, the dry ink is as claimed in claim 1 , the method comprising

bonding macro colourant particles to a liquid print applied on a surface by a digital drop application head,

wherein the dry resin bonds the macro colourant particles to the surface when the macro colourant particles contact the liquid print.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the liquid print comprises at least one of water, glycol, and glycerine.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the dry resin dissolves when the macro colourant particle contacts the liquid print.

13. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the dry resin is further adapted to dissolve when the macro colourant particle is in contact with the liquid print.

14. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each macro colourant particle comprises a particle body of a spray-dried thermosetting or thermoplastic resin.

15. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each macro colourant particle comprises colour pigments in the particle body and on a surface of the particle body.

16. Dry ink as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the macro colourant particles is a mix of a plurality of different types of macro colourant particles.
