Abstract

An embodiment is directed to a device comprising an antenna, a chassis configured to be electrically coupled to the antenna and comprising a slot loaded with at least one tunable component, wherein: the slot is aligned along a longitudinal edge of the chassis, the slot is formed in an area of the chassis based on an identification of currents in the area, and the antenna and chassis are electrically connected at a location based on the area.

Claims (31)

1. A wireless communication device comprising:

an antenna;

a chassis electrically coupled to the antenna, wherein the chassis comprises a conductive portion, wherein a slot is formed through the conductive portion;

a tuning circuit connected with the antenna, the tuning circuit positioned in proximity to an edge of the chassis, the tuning circuit comprising a group of inductors, a capacitor and a switch, wherein the switch is operably connected with the group of inductors, and wherein the capacitor is operably connected in series with an inductor of the group of inductors; and

a controller connected with the switch, wherein the controller causes the switch to selectively electrically connect or disconnect at least one of the group of inductors to adjust a radiation performance associated with the antenna.

2. The wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the chassis comprises a dielectric layer, wherein the group of inductors is positioned along the slot.

3. The wireless communication device of claim 2 , wherein the slot is in proximity to and parallel with an edge of the chassis.

4. The wireless communication device of claim 2 , wherein the chassis has a pair of long edges and a pair of short edges, and wherein the slot is in proximity to and parallel with one of the short edges.

5. The wireless communication device of claim 4 , wherein the slot extends from at least one of the long edges.

6. The wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein different inductors of the group of inductors are utilized for different frequency bands of operation.

7. The wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the capacitor is a single capacitor.

8. The wireless communication device of claim 7 , wherein the single capacitor is connected in series with a single inductor of the group of inductors.

9. The wireless communication device of claim 7 , further comprising a memory, wherein the selectively electrically connecting or disconnecting the at least one of the group of inductors to adjust the radiation performance is based on data stored in a look-up table in the memory.

10. The wireless communication device of claim 7 , wherein the selectively electrically connecting or disconnecting the at least one of the group of inductors to adjust the radiation performance is based on measurements obtained during operations of the wireless communication device.

11. A method comprising:

determining, by a processor of a wireless communication device, a target radiation performance associated with an antenna of the wireless communication device;

identifying, by the processor, a target tuning state for a tuning circuit according to the target radiation performance, the tuning circuit being connected with the antenna;

adjusting, by the processor, a switch to configure the tuning circuit into the target tuning state, wherein the tuning circuit comprises a group of inductors positioned in proximity to a short edge of a chassis of the wireless communication device, wherein the switch is operably connected with the group of inductors, and wherein the adjusting of the switch selectively electrically connects or disconnects the at least one of the group of inductors to adjust the radiation performance associated with the antenna.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising measuring an operational parameter during operations of the wireless communication device, wherein the adjusting of the switch to configure the tuning circuit into the target tuning state is based on the operational parameter.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the identifying of the target tuning state for the tuning circuit according to the target radiation performance is based on data stored in a look-up table in a memory of the wireless communication device.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the data comprises thresholds for a group of measured parameters.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the tuning circuit comprises a single capacitor operably connected in series with a single inductor of the group of inductors.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein different inductors of the group of inductors are selected for switching for different frequency bands of operation of the wireless communication device.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the chassis comprises a conductive layer and a dielectric layer, wherein a slot is formed through the conductive layer, wherein the group of inductors is positioned along the slot, wherein the slot is in proximity to and parallel with the short edge of the chassis, and wherein the slot extends from a long edge of the chassis.

18. A wireless communication device comprising:

an antenna;

a chassis electrically coupled to the antenna, the chassis having a long edge and a short edge;

a tuning circuit connected with the antenna, the tuning circuit positioned in proximity to a short edge of the chassis, the tuning circuit comprising a group of reactive elements and a switch, wherein the switch is operably connected with the group of reactive elements; and

a controller connected with the switch, wherein the controller causes the switch to selectively electrically connect or disconnect at least one of the group of reactive elements to adjust a radiation performance associated with the antenna.

19. The wireless communication device of claim 18 , wherein the tuning circuit comprises a capacitor that is connected with a single inductor of the group of reactive elements.

The wireless communication device of claim 18 , wherein the chassis includes a slot in proximity to the short edge of the chassis, wherein the chassis has a pair of long edges, and wherein the slot is in proximity to one of the long edges, and further comprising a memory, wherein the selectively electrically connecting or disconnecting of the at least one of the group of reactive elements to adjust the radiation performance comprises identifying a target tuning state for the tuning circuit according to data stored in a look-up table in the memory, wherein the data comprises thresholds for a group of measured parameters associated with operations of the wireless communication device.
