Abstract

A fastener cartridge can comprise a support portion, a tissue thickness compensator positioned relative to the support portion, and a plurality of fasteners positioned within the support portion and/or the tissue thickness compensator which can be utilized to fasten tissue. In use, the fastener cartridge can be positioned in a first jaw of a surgical fastening device, wherein a second jaw, or anvil, can be positioned opposite the first jaw. To deploy the fasteners, a staple-deploying member is advanced through the fastener cartridge to move the fasteners toward the anvil. As the fasteners are deployed, the fasteners can capture at least a portion of the tissue thickness compensator therein along with at least a portion of the tissue being fastened.

Claims (56)

1. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a support portion including a cartridge body, comprising:

a plurality of staple cavities that define a staple field, wherein said staple field extends between said staple cavities;

a deck; and

a plurality of cartridge cleats; and

a layer assembly, comprising:

a first layer covering said staple cavities, wherein said first layer comprises a fibrous polymeric composition containing structural voids; and

a second layer for releasably holding said first layer to said support portion;

wherein said cartridge cleats are configured to interact with said layer assembly to limit movement of said layer assembly relative to said deck, and wherein said cartridge cleats are present in said staple field.

2. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said structural voids are configured to promote tissue in-growth.

3. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said first layer further comprises a fibrous non-woven material configured to reinforce said first layer.

4. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said first layer further comprises a fibrous mesh element configured to reinforce said first layer.

5. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said fibrous polymeric composition comprises oxidized regenerated cellulose.

6. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said second layer comprises a biodegradable film wrap.

7. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a support portion including a cartridge body, comprising:

a plurality of staple cavities;

a deck; and

a plurality of cartridge cleats; and

a layer assembly, comprising:

a first layer covering said staple cavities, wherein said first layer comprises a fibrous polymeric composition containing structural voids; and

a second layer for releasably holding said first layer to said support portion;

wherein said cartridge cleats are configured to interact with said layer assembly to limit movement of said layer assembly relative to said deck, wherein said second layer comprises a plurality of apertures alignable with said staple cavities of said cartridge body, and wherein said first layer further comprises a plurality of openings alignable with said apertures of said second layer.

8. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a support portion including a cartridge body defining a plurality of staple cavities and a deck; and

a layer portion, comprising:

a first layer covering said staple cavities of said cartridge body, wherein said first layer comprises a fibrous polymeric composition containing voids; and

a second layer for detachably retaining said first layer to said support portion, wherein said second layer comprises a plurality of apertures alignable with said staple cavities of said cartridge body, and wherein said first layer further comprises a plurality of apertures aligned with said apertures of said second layer.

9. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said support portion further includes a plurality of protrusions extending from said deck, and wherein said protrusions are configured to interact with said layer portion to limit movement of said layer portion relative to said deck.

10. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said voids are structured to promote tissue in-growth.

11. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said first layer further comprises a fibrous non-woven material configured to reinforce said first layer.

12. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said first layer further comprises a fibrous mesh element configured to reinforce said first layer.

13. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said fibrous polymeric composition comprises oxidized regenerated cellulose.

14. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said second layer comprises a film wrap.

15. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a support portion, comprising:

a plurality of staple cavities;

a deck; and

a plurality of spikes extending from said deck; and

a layer arrangement, comprising:

a first layer extending over said staple cavities, wherein said first layer comprises a compressible polymeric composition containing structural voids; and

a second layer for releasably attaching said first layer to said support portion;

wherein said spikes are configured to interact with said layer arrangement to limit movement of said layer arrangement relative to said deck, and wherein said spikes extend along the entire length and width of said deck in between said staple cavities.

16. The staple cartridge of claim 15 , wherein said compressible polymeric composition is fibrous.

17. The staple cartridge of claim 16 , wherein said structural voids are configured to promote tissue in-growth.

18. The staple cartridge of claim 15 , wherein said first layer further comprises a fibrous non-woven material configured to reinforce said first layer.

19. The staple cartridge of claim 15 , wherein said first layer further comprises a fibrous mesh element configured to reinforce said first layer.

20. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a support portion, comprising:

a plurality of staple cavities;

a deck; and

a plurality of spikes extending from said deck; and

a layer arrangement, comprising:

a first layer extending over said staple cavities, wherein said first layer comprises a compressible polymeric composition containing structural voids; and

a second layer for releasably attaching said first layer to said support portion;

wherein said spikes are configured to interact with said layer arrangement to limit movement of said layer arrangement relative to said deck, wherein said second layer comprises a plurality of apertures alignable with said staple cavities, and wherein said first layer comprises a plurality of openings alignable with said apertures of said second layer.
