Abstract

A method of signaling between a photovoltaic module and an inverter module. The inverter module is connected to the photovoltaic module. In an initial mode of operation an initial code is modulated thereby producing an initial signal. The initial signal is transmitted from the inverter module to the photovoltaic module. The initial signal is received by the photovoltaic module. The operating mode is then changed to a normal mode of power conversion, and during the normal mode of operation a control signal is transmitted from the inverter to the photovoltaic module. A control code is demodulated and received from the control signal. The control code is compared with the initial code producing a comparison. The control command of the control signal is validated as a valid control command from the inverter module with the control command only acted upon when the comparison is a positive comparison.

Claims (57)

1. A method comprising:

limiting current from an output of a photovoltaic module;

receiving an initial signal at the photovoltaic module;

receiving a control signal at the photovoltaic module;

validating a control code received in the control signal against an initial code received in the initial signal; and

commencing, in response to the validating of the control code, generation of current on the output of the photovoltaic module.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, after the commencing of the generation of current on the output, a keep alive signal; and

maintaining the generation of current on the output of the photovoltaic module in response to the keep alive signal including the control code.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, after the commencing of the generation of current on the output, an additional signal; and

limiting the current from the output of the photovoltaic module in response to the additional signal not including the control code.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the initial signal and the control signal as modulated signals superimposed on a power line connected to the output.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a difference in respective signal strengths of the initial signal and the control signal; and

validating the control code further based on the difference in the respective signal strengths being less than a previously stored threshold value.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

relaying commands via a second control signal modulated on a carrier signal from the photovoltaic module to a second photovoltaic module.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the validating of the control code comprises determining that the control code compares positively to the initial code.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the validating of the control code comprises determining that the control code is derivable from the initial code or that the initial code is derivable from the control code.

9. A method comprising:

receiving an initial signal at a power generating device;

pairing, in response to receiving the initial signal, the power generating device with a load associated with the initial signal; and

excluding, in response to the pairing, the power generating device from receiving control from devices other than the load.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the power generating device comprises one or more photovoltaic panels and the load comprises an inverter.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more photovoltaic panels comprises a first photovoltaic panel and a second photovoltaic panel, the method further comprising:

storing an initial code, received in the initial signal, in the first photovoltaic panel.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

relaying commands from the first photovoltaic panel to the second photovoltaic panel.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the excluding comprises:

receiving a second signal at the power generating device; and

determining that the second signal does not include a code that compares positively to an initial code received in the initial signal.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

receiving a control signal at the power generating device; and

validating a control code received in the control signal against an initial code received in the initial signal.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the validating comprises:

determining that the control code compares positively to the initial code.

16. An apparatus comprising:

a photovoltaic panel configured to provide electrical power on an output;

a transceiver coupled to the output of the photovoltaic panel; and

a processor configured to:

limit the electrical power provided from the output of the photovoltaic panel;

receive an initial signal through the transceiver;

receive a control signal through the transceiver;

validate a control code received in the control signal against an initial code received in the initial signal; and

commence, in response to validating the control code, generation of current on the output of the photovoltaic panel.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive, after commencing of the generation of current on the output, an additional signal through the transceiver; and

limit the current from the output of the photovoltaic panel in response to the additional signal not including the control code.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the transceiver is further configured to:

receive the initial signal and the control signal as modulated signals superimposed on a power line connected to the output of the photovoltaic panel.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine a difference in respective signal strengths of the initial signal and the control signal; and

validate the control code further based on the difference in the respective signal strengths being less than a previously stored threshold value.

20. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

relay, through the transceiver, commands to a second photovoltaic panel.
