Abstract

A payment terminal, including: a display, an input device configured to generate input signals indicative of a user input, a payment instrument reader configured to receive payment instrument data from a financial payment instrument, a secure processor connected to the payment instrument reader, a main processor connected to the display, the main processor separate and distinct from the secure processor, a secure input processor connected to the input device and the secure processor, wherein the secure processor is operable between an unsecured mode, wherein the secure processor sends input coordinates based on the input signals received from the secure input processor to the main processor; and a secured mode, wherein the secure input processor ceases input coordinate forwarding to the main processor.

Claims (34)

1. A payment terminal, comprising:

a secure processor;

a first display connected to the secure processor;

a first user input device associated with the first display and connected to the secure processor;

a payment instrument reader connected to the secure processor;

a main processor separate from the secure processor, the main processor connected to the secure processor; and

a housing enclosing the secure processor and the main processor.

2. The payment terminal of claim 1 , further comprising a second display connected to the main processor and a second user input device connected to the main processor, wherein the first display, second display, first user input device, second user input device, and payment instrument reader are statically mounted to the housing.

3. The payment terminal of claim 2 , wherein the second display and second user input device are isolated from the secure processor.

4. The payment terminal of claim 2 , wherein the first and second user input devices each comprise a touchscreen overlaid over the first and second displays, respectively.

5. The payment terminal of claim 2 , wherein the first display is statically coupled to the second display by an obtuse junction formed by the housing.

6. The payment terminal of claim 5 , wherein the payment instrument reader is arranged along the obtuse junction.

7. The payment terminal of claim 6 , wherein the payment instrument reader comprises a magnetic stripe reader defining a sliding axis, wherein the sliding axis is parallel the obtuse junction.

8. The payment terminal of claim 1 , wherein the main processor is physically separate from the secure processor.

9. The payment terminal of claim 8 , wherein the main processor is arranged on a separate board from the secure processor.

10. The payment terminal of claim 9 , further comprising:

a wired connection connecting the main processor to the secure processor; and

a physical security mesh overlaying a length of the wired connection.

11. The payment terminal of claim 1 , further comprising a wireless communication module connected to the main processor and a battery connected to the secure processor and main processor, wherein the wireless communication module and the battery are enclosed within the housing.

12. The payment terminal of claim 1 , further comprising secure memory connected to the secure processor, wherein the secure processor is operable in a secured mode, wherein the secure processor interprets user input signals received from the first user input device based on a coordinate map that is locally stored by the secure memory in the secured mode; wherein the main processor receives transaction information from the secure processor, transmits the transaction information to a remote computing system, receives operating instructions from the remote computing system, and operates based on the operating instructions.

13. The payment terminal of claim 12 , wherein the secure processor is operable between the secured mode and an unsecured mode, wherein the secure processor forwards the user input signals to the main processor in the unsecured mode.

14. A point of sale system, comprising:

a secure processor;

a payment instrument reader connected to the secure processor;

a main processor separate from the secure processor, the main processor connected to the secure processor;

a first display connected to the main processor and isolated from the secure processor;

a first user input device connected to the main processor and isolated from the secure processor; and

a housing enclosing the secure processor and the main processor.

15. The point of sale system of claim 14 , wherein the main processor is logically separated from the secure processor.

16. The point of sale system of claim 15 , further comprising a second display connected to the secure processor and a second user input device connected to the secure processor.

17. The point of sale system of claim 16 , wherein the main processor is connected to the first display and the first user input device by a first set of dedicated connections; and wherein the secure processor is connected to the payment instrument reader, the second user input device, and the second user display by a second set of dedicated physical connections separate from the first set of dedicated physical connections.

18. The point of sale system of claim 16 , wherein the first display is statically coupled to the second display by an obtuse junction formed by the housing, wherein the first and second user input devices each comprise touchscreens overlaid over the first and second displays, respectively.

19. The point of sale system of claim 18 , wherein the payment instrument reader is arranged long the obtuse junction.

20. The point of sale system of claim 14 , further comprising a security mesh extending over the secure processor and the main processor.
