Abstract

A dynamic broadcast system as well as a terminal and a control device for use in such a dynamic broadcast system are presented. Transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting and providing content, either via a broadcast network or a broadband network to terminals used in the dynamic broadcast system are dynamically controlled. Further, a decision logic is provided that dynamically decides transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting and providing content based on monitoring data carrying information on user specific content usage and/or transmission quality data carrying information on the quality of a transmission link between a broadband server and a terminal and/or of a reception of content broadcast by a broadcast transmitter.

Claims (29)

1. A dynamic broadcast system for providing content to terminals comprising:

a broadcast transmitter configured to broadcast content via a broadcast network;

a broadband server configured to provide content via a broadband network; and

circuitry configured to

control transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting content via said broadcast network and to determine whether to provide content via said broadband network,

process monitoring data that carries information on user specific content usage and to determine therefrom a measure of content popularity; and

dynamically decide transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting and whether to alternatively provide the content via said broadband network based on the measure of content popularity.

2. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to decide transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting and whether to alternatively provide the content via said broadband network based on the measure of content popularity and based on transmission quality data carrying information on the quality of a transmission link between said broadband server and a terminal.

3. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to decide transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting and whether to alternatively provide the content via said broadband network based on the measure of content popularity and based on transmission quality data carrying information on the quality of a transmission link between said broadcast transmitter and a terminal.

4. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a broadcast receiver configured to receive information from transmitters via said broadcast network.

5. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 4 , wherein said broadcast receiver is configured to deliver signaling information including monitoring data carrying information on user specific content usage to the circuitry.

6. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 4 , wherein said broadcast receiver is configured to deliver signaling information including data transmission quality information to the circuitry.

7. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said broadband server and/or said broadcast transmitter is configured to transmit content identifiers assigned to content or content components.

8. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said broadband server and/or said broadcast transmitter is configured to transmit commands for network initiated switching and/or network initiated recording.

9. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to adapt the content to a data rate of a transmission path.

10. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to adapt the content for delivery via the broadband network.

11. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to determine, based on the said measure of content popularity, that content which is provided via said broadband network should be transmitted on a particular transmission path which is in a white space in the broadcast spectrum.

12. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , comprising a terminal configured to switch between content delivered via a broadcast transmission path and via the broadband network and to detect synchronization information within the content and to perform a seamless transition within a same item of media content.

13. The dynamic broadcast system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the terminal is configured to perform seamless transition between transport steams and IP packet delivered data.

14. A dynamic broadcast method for providing content to terminals comprising:

broadcasting content via a broadcast network;

providing content via a broadband network;

controlling transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting content via said broadcast network and controlling whether to provide content via said broadband network; and

processing monitoring data that carries information on user specific content usage and to determine therefrom a measure of content popularity deciding transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting and whether to alternatively provide the content via said broadband network based on the measure of content popularity.

15. The method as claimed in claim 14 , further comprising deciding transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting and whether to alternatively provide the content via said broadband network based on the measure of content popularity and based on transmission quality data carrying information on the quality of a transmission link between said broadband server and a terminal.

16. The method as claimed in claim 14 , further comprising deciding transmission parameters, transmission times and transmission paths used for broadcasting and whether to alternatively provide the content via said broadband network based on the measure of content popularity and based on transmission quality data carrying information on the quality of a transmission link between said broadcast transmitter and a terminal.

17. The method as claimed in claim 14 , comprising adapting the content to a data rate of a transmission path.

18. The method as claimed in claim 14 , comprising adapting the content for delivery via the broadband network.

19. The method as claimed in claim 14 , comprising determining based on the said measure of content popularity that content which is provided via said broadband network should be instead transmitted on a particular transmission path which is in a white space in the broadcast spectrum.
