Abstract

Systems and methods for automated fault recovery. In some embodiments, an Information Handling System (IHS) includes a processor and a Basic I/O System (BIOS) coupled to the processor, the BIOS having program instructions that, upon execution, cause the IHS to: identify a failure during execution of an Operating System; select, by the BIOS, a given one of a plurality of recovery tools previously registered with the BIOS; and launch the given recovery tool by the BIOS.

Claims (28)

1. An Information Handling System (IHS), comprising:

a processor; and

a Basic I/O System (BIOS) coupled to the processor, the BIOS having program instructions that, upon execution by the processor, cause the IHS to:

store a time stamp for a boot event reached during a previously successful booting of an Operating System (OS);

determine that a current time stamp of a current instance of the boot event reached during a current booting of the OS deviates from the stored time stamp;

in response to the determination and in the absence of a boot fault, select a recovery tool associated with the boot fault, the association having been previously registered with the BIOS; and

launch the recovery tool in the absence of the boot fault.

2. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the recovery tool includes at least one of: a diagnostic tool, a backup tool, a repair tool, or a virus scanner.

3. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the recovery tool includes a service OS.

4. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions, upon execution by the processor, further cause the IHS to store a plurality of associations between a plurality of types of boot faults with corresponding to one or more of a plurality of recovery tools, wherein each of the plurality of recovery tools is stored in a different partition within the same storage device.

5. The IHS of claim 4 , wherein each recovery tool is registered with the BIOS along with an indication of a partition where that recovery tool is stored.

6. The IHS of claim 4 , wherein each recovery tool is registered with the BIOS along with an indication of an associated one of a plurality of different OSs executable by the IHS, and wherein selecting the recovery tool includes selecting a recovery tool associated with the OS being currently booted.

7. The IHS of claim 4 , at least two of the plurality of recovery tools are stored in distinct storage devices, wherein the location of each distinct storage device is registered with the BIOS, and wherein at least one of the storage devices is part of a remotely located backend service.

8. The IHS of claim 4 , wherein to select the given recovery tool, the program instructions, upon execution, cause the IHS to:

select by a partition agent residing in a partition where the selected recovery tool is stored, a sequence of recovery tools in a multistep operation; and

launch two or more recovery tools in the sequence.

9. A method, comprising:

storing, by a Basic I/O System (BIOS) coupled to a processor of an Information Handling System (IHS), a sequence of events associated with a previously successful booting of an Operating System (OS);

determining that a current instance of the sequence of events during a current booting of the OS deviates from the stored sequence of events;

in response to the determination and in the absence of a boot fault, selecting a recovery tool associated with the boot fault, the association having been previously registered with the BIOS; and

launching the recovery tool in the absence of the boot fault.

10. The method claim 9 , further comprising storing a plurality of associations between a plurality of types of boot faults with corresponding to one or more of a plurality of recovery tools, wherein each recovery tool is registered with the BIOS along with an indication of an associated one of a plurality of different OSs and an indication of an associated boot fault, and wherein selecting the recovery tool includes selecting a recovery tool associated with the OS being currently booted and with the absent boot fault.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein selecting the recovery tool includes a sequence of recovery tools, and wherein launching the recovery tool includes launching two or more recovery tools in the sequence.

12. A Basic I/O System (BIOS) firmware having program instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by a processor of an Information Handling System (IHS), cause the IHS to:

store (a) a time stamp for a boot event reached during a previously successful booting of an Operating System (OS) and (b) a sequence of events associated with the previously successful booting of the OS;

determine that (a) a current time stamp of a current instance of the boot event reached during a current booting of the OS deviates from the stored time stamp and (b) a current instance of the sequence of events during the current booting of the OS deviates from the stored sequence of events;

in response to the determinations and in the absence of a boot fault, select a recovery tool associated with the boot fault, the association having been previously registered with the BIOS; and

launch the recovery tool in the absence of the boot fault.
