Abstract

A system includes a security monitoring device and a user device. The security monitoring device has a first audio port; and a means for connecting to a wireless network. The user device has a second audio port. An audio cable is configured to physically connect the first audio port of the monitoring device to the second audio port of the user device. The system is configured such that the monitoring device can be configured to be controlled by the user device via the network by: connecting the first audio port of the monitoring device to the second audio port of the user device with the audio cable; providing a password for the wireless network to the monitoring device from the user device over the audio cable; connecting the monitoring device to the wireless network; and associating the monitoring device to the user device so that the user device can interact with the monitoring device via the wireless network.

Claims (60)

1 . A system comprising:

a security monitoring device comprising:

a first audio port; and

means for connecting to a wireless network;

a user device having a second audio port; and

an audio cable configured to connect the first audio port of the monitoring device to the second audio port of the user device,

wherein the system is configured such that the monitoring device can be configured to be controlled by the user device via the network by:

connecting the first audio port of the monitoring device to the second audio port of the user device with the audio cable;

providing a password for the wireless network to the monitoring device from the user device over the audio cable;

connecting the monitoring device to the wireless network; and

associating the monitoring device to the user device so that the user device can interact with the monitoring device via the wireless network.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the monitoring device does not have a keyboard or a built-in user interface.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the second user device has a keyboard or a built-in user interface

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the user device is a mobile processing device.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the means for connecting to the wireless network comprises a Wifi or cellular module.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to issue a secure cryptographic key between the monitoring device and the user device to enable secure pairing.

7 . A system comprising:

a first device with a first audio port; and

a second user device with a second audio port,

wherein the first device is able to be configured so that it can be controlled from the second user device via a wireless network, and

wherein configuring the first device so that it can be controlled from the second user device via the wireless network comprises:

connecting the first audio port of the first device to the second audio port of the second user device via an audio cable;

providing a network password to a wireless network to the first device from the second, user device, via the audio cable;

connecting the first device to the wireless network; and

associating the first device to the second device with a processing device, so that the second user device can interact with the first device and the processing device, via the wireless network.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the first device does not have a keyboard or a built-in user interface.

9 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the second user device has a keyboard or a built-in user interface

10 . The system of claim 7 further comprising the wireless network,

wherein the first device further comprises a first means for connecting to the wireless network, and

wherein the second user device further comprises a second means for connecting to the wireless network.

11 . The system of claim 7 further comprising:

the audio cable, which is extendable between the first audio port of the first device and the second audio port of the second user device.

12 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the second user device comprises a mobile processing device.

13 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the second user device is connectable to a WiFi network and/or a cellular network.

14 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the system is further configured to issue a cryptographic key between the first device and the second user device for secure communication.

15 . The system of claim 7 , wherein configuring the first device so that it can be controlled from the second user device via the wireless network further comprises:

receiving the network password to the wireless network at the first device via the audio cable, wherein the password was entered by a user at a user interface of the second user device;

using the password, at the first device, to access the wireless network; and

connecting to a security processing system via the network.

16 . The system of claim 15 , further comprising:

the security processing system,

wherein the first device and the second user device are able to be coupled to the security processing system via the wireless network.

17 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the first device is a security monitoring device.

18 . The system of claim 6 , wherein configuring the first device so that it can be controlled from the second user device via the wireless network further comprises:

prompting the user at the user interface of the user device to enter the password,

wherein the prompting and entering of the password at the user interface of the user device is accomplished via either a computer software application executing at the user device or via a web interface, and

wherein the second user device is configured to transmit the password as an encoded audio signal from the second user device to the first device.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the second user device is configured to encode the audio signal and the first device is configured to decode the audio signal.

20 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the first device is configured such that, upon receiving the password to access the wireless network, the first device:

updates wireless local area network credentials at the first device; and

restarts systems necessary to access the wireless network.

21 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the system is further configured to determine whether the second user device is connected to any wireless network, and

if the user device is connected to any wireless network:

ask the user to confirm that the first device should be connected to the same wireless network that the second user device is connected to; and

if the user confirms that the first device should be connected to the same wireless network that the second user device is connected to, then the first device connects to the same wireless network that the second user device is connected to.

22 . The system of claim 21 , wherein if the second user device is not connected to any wireless network, or if the user does not confirm that the first device should be connected to the same wireless network that the second user device is connected to, then, the system is configured to:

search for one or more available networks for the first device to be connected to; and

ask the user, from the second user device, to select one of the one or more available networks, to which the first device should connect.

The system of claim 6 , wherein the first device is further configured such that after the first device accesses the wireless network and connects to the security processing system via the wireless network, the first device sends a unique identifier of the first device to the second user device,

wherein the unique identifier enables the user to setup the security monitoring device as the user's device from a security and administrative perspective.
