Abstract

One embodiment of the present invention provides a polymeric ammunition cartridge having a wicking texturing at the projectile aperture.

Claims (37)

1. A polymeric ammunition having wicking texturing comprising:

a substantially cylindrical primer insert comprising

a top surface opposite a bottom surface and a substantially cylindrical coupling element that extends from the bottom surface, wherein the substantially cylindrical coupling element forms an outer surface opposite an inner circumferential surface,

a primer recess in the top surface that extends toward the bottom surface,

a primer flash aperture positioned in the primer recess to extend through the bottom surface,

a flash hole groove that extends circumferentially about the primer flash aperture in the primer recess, and

a locking groove that extends circumferentially about the top surface;

a substantially cylindrical polymeric middle body comprising a first polymer that extends from a cylindrical middle body coupling region to the substantially cylindrical primer insert, wherein the first polymer is over-molded over the substantially cylindrical coupling element to the locking groove and into the primer flash aperture to the flash hole groove;

a primer inserted into the primer recess;

a textured middle body surface on the cylindrical middle body coupling region;

a substantially cylindrical polymeric projectile end mated to the substantially cylindrical polymeric middle body molded from a second polymer, wherein the substantially cylindrical polymeric projectile end comprises a projectile end coupling region that extends to a shoulder region that reduces to a neck region having a projectile aperture wherein the projectile end coupling region couples to the textured middle body surface;

a propellant chamber defined between the primer flash aperture and the projectile aperture;

a propellant at least partially filling the propellant chamber;

a textured projectile aperture surface about an inner surface of the projectile aperture and extending onto the neck, wherein the textured projectile aperture surface couples the projectile to the projectile aperture by allowing an adhesive to flow down the textured projectile aperture surface; and

a projectile frictionally fitted in the bullet-end aperture contacting the textured projectile aperture surface.

2. The ammunition of claim 1 , wherein the textured middle body surface comprises etching, grooves, hatching, knurling, a texture, rings, or a combination thereof.

3. The ammunition of claim 1 , wherein the textured projectile aperture surface comprises etching, grooves, hatching, knurling, a texture, rings, or a combination thereof.

4. The ammunition of claim 1 , further comprising a primer flash aperture groove positioned in the primer recess around the primer flash aperture and the first polymer composition extends into the primer flash aperture to form a flash hole.

5. The ammunition of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer composition is a ductile polymer.

6. The ammunition of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer composition, the second polymer composition or both comprise a nylon polymer.

7. The ammunition of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer composition, the second polymer composition or both comprise a fiber-reinforced polymeric composite.

8. The ammunition of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer composition, the second polymer composition or both comprise between about 10 and about 70 wt % glass fiber fillers, mineral fillers, or mixtures thereof.

9. The ammunition of claim 1 , wherein the substantially cylindrical coupling region and the polymeric bullet-end coupling are welded or bonded together.

10. The ammunition of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer composition, the second polymer composition or both comprise polyurethane prepolymer, cellulose, fluoro-polymer, ethylene inter-polymer alloy elastomer, ethylene vinyl acetate, nylon, polyether imide, polyester elastomer, polyester sulfone, polyphenyl amide, polypropylene, polyvinylidene fluoride or thermoset polyurea elastomer, acrylics, homopolymers, acetates, copolymers, acrylonitrile-butadinen-styrene, thermoplastic fluoro polymers, inomers, polyamides, polyamide-imides, polyacrylates, polyatherketones, polyaryl-sulfones, polybenzimidazoles, polycarbonates, polybutylene, terephthalates, polyether imides, polyether sulfones, thermoplastic polyimides, thermoplastic polyurethanes, polyphenylene sulfides, polyethylene, polypropylene, polysulfones, polyvinylchlorides, styrene acrylonitriles, polystyrenes, polyphenylene, ether blends, styrene maleic anhydrides, polycarbonates, allyls, aminos, cyanates, epoxies, phenolics, unsaturated polyesters, bismaleimides, polyurethanes, silicones, vinylesters, urethane hybrids, polyphenylsulfones, copolymers of polyphenylsulfones with polyethersulfones or polysulfones, copolymers of poly-phenylsulfones with siloxanes, blends of polyphenylsulfones with polysiloxanes, poly(etherimide-siloxane) copolymers, blends of polyetherimides and polysiloxanes, and blends of polyetherimides and poly(etherimide-siloxane) copolymers.

11. The ammunition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more internal structures in the neck to support a bullet.

12. The ammunition of claim 1 , wherein the bullet aperture comprises one, two, three, or more annular rings that mate with one, two, three, or more corresponding annular grooves positioned on the bullet.

13. The ammunition of claim 1 , further comprising a diffuser positioned in the primer recess between the primer and the flash hole groove.

14. A polymeric ammunition having wicking texturing comprising:

a primer insert comprising a top surface opposite a bottom surface and a coupling element that extends from the bottom surface, wherein the coupling element forms an outer surface opposite an inner circumferential surface, a primer recess in the top surface that extends toward the bottom surface, a primer flash aperture positioned in the primer recess to extend through the bottom surface, a flash hole groove that extends circumferentially about the primer flash aperture in the primer recess, and a locking groove that extends circumferentially about the top surface;
