Stapling system including an actuation system
View Patent ↗A surgical stapling system for stapling patient tissue is disclosed. The surgical stapling system comprises an end effector and an actuation system. The end effector comprises a first jaw, a movable jaw operably attached to the first jaw, and a plurality of staples. The actuation system is configured to actuate the movable jaw toward the first jaw to clamp the patient tissue against the first jaw while the movable jaw progressively drives the staples against the first jaw to staple the patient tissue.

a proximal end;
a distal end;
a plurality of staples;
a fixed jaw;
a movable jaw, wherein said movable jaw is actuatable to clamp the patient tissue against said fixed jaw and to fire said staples; and
a knife member configured to move from said proximal end toward said distal end, wherein said knife member comprises a first cam configured to engage said movable jaw and a second cam configured to engage said fixed jaw, and wherein said first cam and said second cam are configured to control the position of said movable jaw relative to said fixed jaw.
2. The end effector of claim 1 , further comprising an implantable layer positioned between said movable jaw and said fixed jaw.
3. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said knife member comprises a cutting edge, and wherein said cutting edge transects the patient tissue as said knife member moves from said proximal end toward said distal end.
4. A surgical stapling system for stapling patient tissue, comprising:
an end effector, comprising:
a first jaw;
a movable jaw operably attached to said first jaw; and
a plurality of staples; and
an actuation system configured to actuate said movable jaw toward said first jaw to clamp the patient tissue against said first jaw while said movable jaw progressively drives said staples against said first jaw to staple the patient tissue.
5. The surgical stapling system of claim 4 , wherein said end effector further comprises an implantable layer positioned between said movable jaw and said first jaw.
6. The surgical stapling system of claim 4 , wherein said end effector further comprises:
a proximal end;
a distal end;
a longitudinal movable jaw slot defined in said movable jaw;
a longitudinal first jaw slot defined in said first jaw; and
a knife member configured to slidably translate within said movable jaw slot and said first jaw slot such that the patient tissue is clamped between said movable jaw and said first jaw and said staples are formed in the patient tissue as said knife member translates from said proximal end toward said distal end.
7. The surgical stapling system of claim 6 , wherein said knife member comprises a cutting surface, and wherein said cutting surface transects the patient tissue as said knife member translates from said proximal end toward said distal end.
8. A surgical stapling system for stapling patient tissue, comprising:
a handle;
a shaft extending from said handle;
an end effector attachable to said shaft, wherein said end effector comprises:
a first jaw;
a movable jaw operably attached to said first jaw; and
a plurality of staples; and
a firing system configured to actuate said movable jaw toward said first jaw to clamp the patient tissue against said first jaw and to progressively drive said staples against said first jaw to staple the patient tissue.
9. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said end effector further comprises an implantable layer positioned between said movable jaw and said first jaw.
10. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said end effector further comprises:
a proximal end;
a distal end;
a longitudinal movable jaw slot defined in said movable jaw;
a longitudinal first jaw slot defined in said first jaw; and
a knife member configured to slidably translate within said movable jaw slot and said first jaw slot to control the position of said movable jaw relative to said first jaw while said staples are formed in the patient tissue as said knife member translates from said proximal end toward said distal end.
11. The surgical stapling system of claim 10 , wherein said knife member comprises a cutting surface, and wherein said cutting surface transects the patient tissue as said knife member translates from said proximal end toward said distal end.
12. A surgical stapling system for stapling patient tissue, comprising:
a handle;
a shaft extending from said handle;
an end effector attachable to said shaft, wherein said end effector comprises:
a proximal end;
a distal end;
a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples;
a first jaw comprising a first longitudinal slot; and
a rotatable jaw configured to rotate relative to said first jaw, wherein said rotatable jaw comprises a second longitudinal slot, wherein said rotatable jaw is actuatable to clamp the patient tissue between said rotatable jaw and said first jaw and to deploy said staples from said staple cartridge;
a knife configured to translate toward said distal end during a staple firing stroke, wherein said knife comprises:
a first cam configured to engage said first jaw, wherein said first cam is configured to translate toward said distal end along said first longitudinal slot; and
a second cam configured to engage said rotatable jaw, wherein said second cam is configured to translate toward said distal end along said second longitudinal slot, and wherein said first cam and said second cam are configured to control the position of said rotatable jaw relative to said first jaw; and
a firing system configured to advance said knife through said staple firing stroke.
13. The surgical stapling system of claim 12 , wherein said end effector further comprises an implantable layer positioned between said rotatable jaw and said first jaw.
