Abstract

Methods and apparatus for selecting and delivering advertising or promotional content based on, e.g., the attributes of a desired demographic. In one embodiment, the invention enhances advertising or promotional penetration into a particular demographic of a network subscriber pool by correlating the advertising/promotion (and even the contextual program content) with specific users or groups of users within the pool. This approach decouples the advertising or promotion from any given program or lineup, and gives the network operator flexibility in deciding where, when, and how often to insert advertisements or promotions in order to achieve the desired result. Dynamic network architectures such as broadcast switched architectures can also be leveraged to further enhance flexibility and targeting precision. In effect, the network advertising or promotion model is made results-driven (versus program-centric). Subscriber privacy is also optionally maintained, thus ensuring that stored data is not traceable to a specific user.

processing apparatus; and

storage apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus, the storage apparatus comprising at least one computer program having a plurality of instructions, the plurality of instructions configured to, when executed by the processing apparatus:

receive data representative of a request for delivery, via the content delivery network, of digital secondary content, the delivery to a computerized client device associated with a user, the digital secondary content relating to at least one target demographic or target psychographic;

obtain user data relating to the user;

determine that the user correlates to at least one of the at least one target demographic or target psychographic of the digital secondary content, the determination based at least in part on a computerized evaluation of: (i) data relating to the at least one target demographic or target psychographic, and (ii) the user data; and

cause delivery of the digital secondary content to the computerized client device associated with the user;

wherein:

the computerized evaluation comprises an algorithmic assignment of a priority to user, and

the algorithmic assignment of the priority to the user is based on a correspondence of a parameter associated with at least the user to at least one descriptor of the digital secondary content, the assigned priority being higher than a priority assigned to at least one or more second users of the content delivery network; and

wherein the delivery is based at least on the priority assigned to the user.

8. The computerized network apparatus of claim 7 , wherein:

the data representative of the request is received from the computerized client device;

the content delivery network comprises a broadcast switched architecture (BSA) network; and

the delivery comprises instantiation of a new broadcast switched program stream comprising the digital secondary content, the new broadcast switched program stream accessible by the computerized client device via a content switching apparatus disposed at a hub of the BSA network.

9. The computerized network apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the delivery comprises instantiation of a video on-demand (VoD) session and streaming of the digital secondary content via the VoD session.

10. The computerized network apparatus of claim 7 , wherein:

the delivery comprises a selective switch of the computerized client device from a digital primary content stream to at least one digital secondary content stream, the selective switch based at least in part on tuning data of the computerized client device; and

the tuning data comprises data relating to at least one program content selection from the at least one of the computerized client devices.

11. The computerized network apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the data relating to the at least one program content selection comprises at least two of: (i) a history of program requests, (ii) times at which requested programs were broadcast, (iii) frequency of channel changes, (iv) recorded periods of non-activity, and (v) history of on-demand requests.

12. The computerized network apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of instructions are further configured to, when executed by the processing apparatus:

query a database to obtain the user data, the database having a plurality of data elements relating to a plurality of respective users; and

utilize a one-way cryptographic hashing function on at least one of the plurality of data elements such that a data element associated with the user cannot be used to personally identify the user.

13. The computerized network apparatus of claim 7 , wherein:

the user data comprises demographic data, at least portions of the demographic data being unique to the user; and

the plurality of instructions are further configured to, when executed by the processing apparatus, allocate at least the user to one or more data subsets based at least in part on the demographic data.
