Abstract

Different data communication architectures deliver a wide variety of content, including audio and video content, to consumers. The architectures employ channel bonding to deliver more bandwidth than any single communication channel can carry. In some implementations, different network types may be channel bonded to function as a single logical channel.

Claims (38)

1. A system comprising:

an input interface communicatively coupled to a wide area network;

output interfaces to individual communication channels of a local area network, wherein the individual communication channels comprise different network types; and

processor in communication with the input interface and the output interfaces, the processor configured to:

determine which of the communications channels to employ together as a bonded channel group;

obtain source data from the input interface for transmission to an electronic device; and

selectively assign the source data to at least two of the communication channels of the local area network in the bonded channel group for transmission to the electronic device over at least two of the different network types based on a data type of a content of the source data, the data type comprising at least one of audio data, video data, or other types of data.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to determine which of the different network types are available.

3. The system according to claim 2 , wherein the processor is configured to change a bit rate based on the different network types that are available.

4. The system according to claim 2 , wherein the data type comprises at least one of the audio data or the video data and the processor is configured to change transcoder parameters for transcoding the at least one of the audio data or the video data based on the different network types that are available.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to assign packets of the source data into chunks, the processor being configured to select a chunk size based on the network type of at least one of the communication channels.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to allocate a channel bonding buffer for each communication channel, the processor being configured to select a size of the channel bonding buffer based on the network type of the communication channel.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the local area network comprises an in-home network and the network types include at least two of MoCA, WiFi, powerline, and Ethernet.

8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is a component of a gateway and the processor is further configured to insert channel bonding data into frames defined below a transport layer.

9. The system according to claim 8 , wherein the electronic device comprises a set top box and the processor is further configured to;

communicate with the set top box to receive a communication channel preference from the set top box, the channel bonding data comprising sequencing information; and

selectively assign the source data to the at least two of the communication channels based at least in part on the received communication channel preference.

10. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is a component of a set top box.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to distribute the source data in a round-robin manner across the bonded channel group.

12. A method comprising:

within a gateway processor:

obtaining a packet stream comprising content;

dividing the packet stream into communication units;

identifying a bonded channel group of communication channels among a set of available communication channels, wherein a first channel of the bonded channel group has a first network type and a second channel of the bonded channel group has as second network type different from the first network type; and

distributing, based at least in part on a data type of the content of the packet stream, the communication units across the bonded channel group within an in-home network for transmission to an electronic device in the in-home network.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising obtaining a bit rate for each communication channel in the bonded channel group.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the data type of the content comprises at least one of audio data, video data, or other types of data.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising allocating packets to communication channels based on a channel condition of one of the communication channels of the bonded channel group.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising allocating a buffer for each channel in the channel bonding group, allocating packets to communication channels based on buffer fullness.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising distributing marker packets across the bonded channel group in advance of the communication units.

18. A method comprising:

obtaining a packet stream;

dividing the packet stream into communication units, each of the communication units divided from the packet stream having a respective packet data type of a plurality of packet data types;

identifying a bonded channel group of communication channels among a set of available communication channels, wherein a first channel of the bonded channel group has a first network type and a second channel of the bonded channel group has as second network type different from the first network type;

assigning a first communication unit of the packet stream to the first channel of the bonded channel group for transmission to an electronic device based on the first communication unit having a first packet data type of the plurality of packet data types; and

assigning a second communication unit of the packet stream to the second channel of the bonded channel group for transmission to the electronic device based on the second communication unit having a second packet data type of the plurality of packet data types, the second packet data type differing from the first packet data type.

19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein the first communication unit is distributed to the first channel based on the first communication unit comprising I-frame data and the second communication unit is assigned to the second channel based on the second communication unit comprising B-frame data or P-frame data.

20. The method according to claim 18 , wherein the first communication unit is assigned to the first channel based on the first communication unit comprising base layer data and the second communication unit is assigned to the second channel based on the second communication unit comprising enhancement layer data.
