Abstract

A fastening system for fastening tissue that comprises a cartridge and an implant is disclosed. The cartridge comprises a cartridge body comprising removable fasteners. The implant comprises a first portion comprising a first absorbable polymer comprising a first compactness of first fibers and a first medicament releasably stored in the first compactness of the first fibers of the first portion. The implant further comprises a second portion comprising a second absorbable polymer comprising a second compactness of second fibers, wherein the second compactness is different than the first compactness. The second absorbable polymer is different than the first absorbable polymer. The implant further comprises a second medicament releasably stored in the second compactness of the second fibers of the second portion. The second medicament is different than the first medicament. The release of the second medicament and the release of the first medicament co-operatively produce a healing result.

Claims (35)

1. A stapling system for stapling tissue, comprising:

a cartridge, comprising:

a deck;

staple cavities defined in said deck; and

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

an anvil configured to deform said staples; and

a buttress, comprising:

a first layer comprised of a first absorbable polymer, wherein said first layer comprises a first compactness of first fibers;

a first medicament embedded in said first compactness of said first fibers of said first layer;

a second layer comprised of a second absorbable polymer which is different than said first absorbable polymer, wherein said second layer comprises a second compactness of second fibers different than said first compactness of said first fibers, and wherein said second layer co-operates with said first layer; and

a second medicament embedded in said second compactness of second fibers of said second layer which is different than said first medicament, wherein said second medicament co-operates with said first medicament;

wherein said first medicament is released at a first rate as a result of said first compactness of said first fibers, and wherein said second medicament is released at a second rate as a result of said second compactness of said second fibers which is different than said first rate.

2. A stapling system for stapling tissue, comprising:

a cartridge, comprising:

a deck;

staple cavities defined in said deck; and

staples removably stored in said staple cavities; and

a buttress, comprising:

a first layer comprising a first absorbable polymer and a first quantity of first fibers that creates a first density of said first fibers;

a first medicament embedded in said first density of said first fibers of said first layer;

a second layer comprising a second absorbable polymer which is different than said first absorbable polymer and a second quantity of second fibers that creates a second density of second fibers, wherein said first density is different than said second density, and wherein said second layer supports said first layer; and

a second medicament embedded in said second density of said second fibers of said second layer which is different than said first medicament, wherein said second medicament affects a healing result with said first medicament;

wherein said first medicament is released at a first rate as a result of said first density of said first fibers, and wherein said second medicament is released at a second rate as a result of said second density of said second fibers which is different than said first rate.

3. The stapling system of claim 2 , further comprising an anvil configured to deform said staples.

4. A fastening system for fastening tissue, comprising:

a cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body; and

fasteners removably stored in said cartridge body; and

an implant, comprising:

a first portion comprising a first absorbable polymer comprising a first compactness of first fibers;

a first medicament releasably stored in said first compactness of said first fibers of said first portion;

a second portion comprising a second absorbable polymer comprising a second compactness of second fibers, wherein said second compactness is different than said first compactness, and wherein said second absorbable polymer is different than said first absorbable polymer; and

a second medicament releasably stored in said second compactness of said second fibers of said second portion, wherein said second medicament is different than said first medicament, and wherein the release of said second medicament and the release of said first medicament co-operatively produce a healing result;

wherein said first medicament is released at a first rate as a result of said first compactness of said first fibers, and wherein said second medicament is released at a second rate as a result of said second compactness of said second fibers which is different than said first rate.

5. The fastening system of claim 4 , further comprising an anvil configured to deform said fasteners.
