Abstract

A stapling system for stapling tissue is disclosed. The stapling system comprises a cartridge body, staples removably stored in the cartridge body, and an implantable layer. The implantable layer comprises a first portion comprising a first density, wherein the first portion is comprised of a material. The implantable layer further comprises a lattice comprising a second density, wherein the first density is different than the second density, and wherein the lattice is comprised of the material. The implantable layer further comprises a medicament which promotes tissue ingrowth into the layer in a specified pattern.

Claims (28)

1. A stapling system for stapling tissue, comprising:

a cartridge, comprising:

a deck;

staple cavities defined in said deck; and

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

an anvil configured to deform said staples; and

a buttress, comprising:

a first portion comprising a first resiliency, wherein said first portion is comprised of a material;

a lattice comprising a second resiliency, wherein said first resiliency is different than said second resiliency, and wherein said lattice is comprised of said material;

an array of openings defined in said lattice, wherein said array of openings defines at least one channel; and

a medicament in said openings which induces tissue ingrowth into said channel.

2. A stapling system for stapling tissue, comprising:

a cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body; and

a buttress, comprising:

a first portion comprising a first elasticity, wherein said first portion is comprised of a material;

a lattice comprising a second elasticity, wherein said first elasticity is different than said second elasticity, and wherein said lattice is comprised of said material;

a pattern of openings defined in said lattice, wherein said pattern of openings defines a passage way; and

a medicament in said lattice which induces tissue ingrowth within said passage way.

3. The stapling system of claim 2 , further comprising an anvil configured to deform said staples.

4. A stapling system for stapling tissue, comprising:

a cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body; and

an implantable layer, comprising:

a first portion comprising a first density, wherein said first portion is comprised of a material;

a lattice comprising a second density, wherein said first density is different than said second density, and wherein said lattice is comprised of said material; and

a medicament which promotes tissue ingrowth into said layer in a specified pattern.

5. The stapling system of claim 4 , further comprising an anvil configured to deform said staples.
