Abstract

Versatile tissue collection devices that can provide reduced crossing profiles, fluid pressure release, and/or easy cleaning or removal. In particular, devices having tissue collection devices with multiple configurations to facilitate navigation through narrow vessel cross-sections while also providing adequate tissue storage capacity. Additionally, the devices may include detachable components that allow easy removal, cleaning, and replacement during a procedure. Furthermore, venting elements and sections may be included to relieve fluid buildup in storage reservoirs.

Claims (27)

1. A tissue collection device adapted to couple with a catheter, the device comprising:

a tip portion having a proximal housing and a distal housing, the proximal housing adapted to mechanically couple to the distal housing to form the tip portion, and the proximal housing adapted to be coupled to the catheter wherein the proximal housing is adapted to couple to the distal housing upon relative rotation of the proximal housing with respect to the distal housing and wherein the relative rotation is in a first rotational direction, wherein the proximal housing is adapted to decouple from the distal housing upon relative rotation of the proximal housing and the distal housing in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction;

a tissue storage reservoir within at least the proximal housing of the tip portion, wherein the distal housing is configured to detach from the proximal housing and the catheter to expose tissue in the tissue storage reservoir of the proximal housing; and

a guidewire lumen defined by a first channel on the proximal housing and a second channel on the distal housing.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal housing is configured to couple to the distal housing through a mated fit.

The device of claim 1 , wherein either the proximal housing or the distal housing comprises a plurality of angled tabs and the distal housing or proximal housing, respectively, comprises a plurality of slots for receiving the plurality of angled tabs to mechanically couple the proximal housing and the distal housing when the proximal housing and distal housing are fitted together.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the angled tabs are formed from a wall of the proximal housing or the distal housing.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal housing and the distal housing are laterally locked when mechanically coupled.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal housing and distal housing are configured to be rotationally locked when a guidewire is placed through the first and second channels.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the tissue storage reservoir is within the proximal housing and not within the distal housing.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the tissue storage reservoir is within the proximal housing and the distal housing.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein an outer wall of the proximal housing is adapted to engage with an inner wall of the distal housing to releasably lock the proximal housing to the distal housing.

10. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a flush port in the proximal housing configured to provide fluid to the storage reservoir when the distal housing has been detached from the proximal housing so as to flush tissue out of the opening.

11. The device of claim 1 wherein the proximal housing and the distal housing are adapted to mechanically couple through a threaded fit.

12. A tissue collection device comprising:

a housing configured to couple to a distal end of an atherectomy catheter, the housing including a housing proximal end and a housing distal end, the housing distal end configured to be removable from the housing proximal end to expose an opening in the housing proximal end and a plurality of projecting tabs on a first of either the housing proximal end or the housing distal end configured to mate with a plurality of slots on a second of the housing distal end or the housing proximal end, respectively;

a storage reservoir within the housing proximal end configured to store tissue therein; and

a flush port in the housing proximal end configured to provide fluid to the storage reservoir when the housing distal end has been detached from the housing proximal end so as to flush tissue out of the opening.

13. The device of claim 12 , further comprising a first coupling mechanism at the housing proximal end configured to couple to a second coupling mechanism on the distal end of the catheter.

14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the projecting tabs project radially inward with respect to an inner wall of the housing proximal end or the housing distal end.

15. The device of claim 12 , wherein the projecting tabs are adapted to engage with corresponding slots upon the relative rotation of the housing distal end and the housing proximal end.

16. The device of claim 12 , wherein the projecting tabs are curved.

17. The device of claim 12 , further comprising a venting element adapted to allow fluid to escape from the tissue storage reservoir, wherein the venting element comprises an aperture.

18. The device of claim 12 , further comprising a venting element adapted to allow fluid to escape from the tissue storage reservoir, wherein the venting element comprises a mesh net.

19. The device of claim 12 , further comprising a venting element adapted to allow fluid to escape from the tissue storage reservoir, wherein the venting element is within the housing distal end.

20. The device of claim 12 , further comprising a venting element adapted to allow fluid to escape from the tissue storage reservoir, wherein the venting element is within the housing proximal end.

21. The device of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of slots comprise openings through a wall of the housing distal end or the housing proximal end.
