Abstract

An artificial disc is provided which more closely matches the movement of the natural spine. The artificial disc uses one or more projections and corresponding recesses to provide a sliding articulation. The artificial joint is inherently stable in that compressive forces placed on the disc such as the weight placed upon the joint or the tension of surrounding tissues urges the joint towards a neutral position and not farther away from a neutral position.

Claims (21)

1. An artificial disc for forming an artificial joint in a spine comprising:

an upper portion and a lower portion, the upper portion and lower portion collectively having a plurality of lobes and a plurality of troughs, the lobes engaging the troughs at three contact points disposed in a triangular arrangement with a first contact point which is centered laterally and a second contact point and third contact point which are spaced apart laterally from each other and which are spaced apart from the first contact point in an anterior-posterior direction, wherein the lobes slide across the surfaces of the troughs to different locations within the troughs while remaining in contact with the troughs in order to thereby allow for articulation of the artificial disc.

2. The artificial disc of claim 1 , wherein movement of the upper portion in a first direction causes tilting of the upper portion in that direction.

The artificial disc of claim 1 , wherein the first contact point is defined by contact between a first lobe and a first trough, and wherein the trough comprises a generally horizontal portion disposed away from a center of the artificial disc and wherein the trough transitions from the generally horizontal portion to a sloping portion having a greater vertical slope towards the center of the artificial disc.

The artificial disc of claim 3 , wherein, from a neutral position of the artificial disc, movement of the first lobe away from the center of the artificial disc moves the first lobe generally horizontally and wherein movement of the first lobe towards the center of the artificial disc moves the first lobe horizontally and vertically to increase the distance between the upper portion and the lower portion of the artificial disc.

The artificial disc of claim 1 , wherein the first contact point, second contact point, and third contact point are defined by contact between a first lobe, a second lobe, and a third lobe and corresponding articulation surfaces on troughs, and wherein each of the first lobe, second lobe, and third lobe contacts a trough at a location which is curved and a location wherein, from a neutral position of the artificial disc, movement of the lobe along the trough in a first direction is generally horizontal and movement of the lobe along the trough in a second direction opposite the first direction is generally horizontal and vertical.

6. An artificial disc comprising:

an upper portion having a bone attachment surface on an upper side thereof and an upper articulation surface on a lower side thereof;

a lower portion having a bone attachment surface on a lower side thereof and a lower articulation surface on an upper side thereof;

wherein the upper articulation surface and the lower articulation surface comprise a plurality of projections which slide across corresponding recesses, wherein the upper articulation surface contacts the lower articulation surface at three locations, wherein the upper surface moves relative to the lower surface during articulation of the artificial disc such that the upper articulation surface remains in contact with the lower articulation surface at the three locations, and wherein the upper articulation surface and the lower articulation surface comprise a first projection and a corresponding first recess which contact each other, and wherein the recess is curved so that a first section located away from a center of the artificial disc is generally horizontal and so that a second section located closer towards a center of the artificial disc than the first section is horizontal and vertical, wherein the recess transitions smoothly between the first section and the second section, and wherein the first projection moves between the first section and the second section during articulation of the artificial disc.

7. The artificial disc of claim 6 , wherein the three locations comprise a first location which is centered laterally and a second location and a third location which are spaced apart laterally from each other and which are spaced apart in an anterior-posterior direction from the first location.

8. The artificial disc of claim 6 , wherein the artificial disc comprises three projections which are spaced apart in a triangular arrangement.

9. The artificial disc of claim 8 , wherein the three projections are curved and wherein the three projections contact the opposing articulation surface at a location which is curved and which has a greater radius of curvature to allow the projection to move to different locations on the opposing articulation surface during articulation of the artificial disc.

10. An artificial disc comprising:

an upper portion having a bone attachment surface on an upper side thereof and an upper articulation surface on a lower side thereof;

a lower portion having a bone attachment surface on a lower side thereof and a lower articulation surface on an upper side thereof;

wherein the upper articulation surface comprises a plurality of projections and wherein the lower articulation surface comprises a plurality of recesses;

wherein the plurality of projections contact the plurality of recesses at three points; and

wherein the upper articulation surface comprises a first projection of the plurality of projections and wherein the lower articulation surface comprises a first recess of the plurality of recesses which has a generally horizontal section disposed away from a center of the artificial disc and which transitions towards a more vertically sloped sections towards the center of the artificial disc.

The artificial disc of claim 10 , wherein, in a neutral position of the artificial disc, each projection contacts the lower articulation surface at a location which extends generally horizontally in a first direction and horizontally and vertically in a second direction opposite the first direction.

The artificial disc of claim 10 , wherein the upper articulation surface comprises three projections, wherein the first projection is centered laterally and wherein second and third projections are spaced apart laterally from each other and spaced apart in an anterior-posterior direction relative to the first projection.
