Abstract

A system and method are described for a single-piece IoT security device. For example, one embodiment of an Internet of Things (IoT) security apparatus comprises: a first module to detect motion of an object to which the IoT device is fixedly coupled; a wireless radio controller communicatively coupled to the first module, the first module to wake the wireless radio controller responsive to detecting motion of the object; and a proximity sensor and associated logic to take a proximity reading and to compare the proximity reading to a stored reading taken when the object was in a secure position.

a proximity sensor and associated logic to take a proximity measurement to determine whether the object is in a secure position; and

the wireless radio controller to wirelessly transmit an alert to an IoT hub if the proximity measurement indicates that the object is not in a secure position.

2. The IoT security apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the proximity sensor is to compare the proximity measurement to a stored proximity measurement taken when the object was known to be in a secure position, wherein if the proximity measurement does not match the stored proximity measurement, within a designated threshold, then the object is determined to not be in a secure position.

3. The IoT security apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the object comprises a door or window and wherein the secure position comprises a closed position of the door or window.

4. The IoT security apparatus as in claim 3 wherein the first module comprises an accelerometer.

5. The IoT security apparatus as in claim 4 wherein the wireless radio controller comprises a Bluetooth Low Energy controller (BTLE).

6. The IoT security apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the IoT hub is configured to transmit the alert to an IoT service and/or an app or application installed on a user's mobile device or computer.

7. The IoT security apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the proximity sensor takes the proximity measurement by transmitting electromagnetic radiation and measuring the electromagnetic radiation after it is reflected off of one or more surfaces within the proximity of the object.

8. The IoT security apparatus as in claim 7 wherein the electromagnetic radiation comprises infrared (IR) radiation.

9. The IoT security apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the proximity sensor compares a measured level of the IR radiation reflected off of the one or more surfaces with a level of the IR radiation known to have been measured when the object is in a secure position.

10. The IoT security apparatus as in claim 9 wherein the measured level comprises an intensity level.

11. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the proximity sensor comprises a force sensing resistor (FSR).

12. The apparatus as in claim 11 further comprising:

a rubber bumper having a top surface fixedly coupled to the FSR and a back surface comprising adhesive to fixedly couple the FSR to a door, door frame, window, or window frame, the rubber bumper to transmit a force through the FSR when the door or window is in a closed position.

13. The apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the first module comprises a piezo electric vibration sensor to generate a voltage applied to the wireless radio controller when force, flexure, or vibration is applied to the piezo electric vibration sensor.

14. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the proximity sensor comprises a strain gauge bonded to a flat spring, wherein resistance of the strain gauge changes in response to a strain applied to the flat spring, the flat spring configured to have the strain applied responsive to the object being in one or more specified positions.

15. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the first module comprises a piezo electric film and the proximity sensor comprises a piezo resistive film configured to generate a variable resistance based on a force or flexure applied thereto, the piezo resistive film being positioned with respect to the object to detect a current position of the object based on a force or flexure applied to the piezo resistive film in different positions.

16. The apparatus as in claim 15 wherein the object comprises a door or window and wherein the piezo electric film and piezo resistive film are to be fixedly mounted inside a latch or bolt slot of the door or window.

17. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the proximity sensor comprises a magnetometer.

18. A method comprising:

detecting motion of an object using an IoT device fixedly coupled to the object;

waking a wireless radio controller within the IoT device responsive to detecting motion of the object; and

determining whether the object is in a secure position using a proximity sensor and associated logic within the IoT device; and

wirelessly transmitting an alert from the wireless radio controller of the IoT device to an IoT hub if the proximity measurement indicates that the object is not in a secure position.

19. The method as in claim 18 wherein the proximity sensor is to compare the proximity measurement to a stored proximity measurement taken when the object was known to be in a secure position, wherein if the proximity measurement does not match the stored proximity measurement, within a designated threshold, then the object is determined to not be in a secure position.

20. The method as in claim 19 wherein the object comprises a door or window and wherein the secure position comprises a closed position of the door or window.

21. The method as in claim 20 detecting the motion of the object is performed with an accelerometer.

22. The method as in claim 21 wherein the wireless radio controller comprises a Bluetooth Low Energy controller (BTLE).
