Abstract

An exemplary surgical method of treating tissue within the body of a patient, may include providing an endocutter having a knife, a staple holder along which the knife is slidable, feeder belts located on each side of the knife, staples having a first size, those staples integral with and breakable from at least one feeder belt, and staples having a second size different from the first size, those staples integral with and breakable from at least one feeder belt; engaging tissue of the patient with the staple holder; deploying at least two staples having a first size; disengaging tissue of the patient from the staple holder; once again engaging tissue of the patient with the same staple holder; and deploying at least two staples having a second size.

Claims (25)

1. A surgical method of treating tissue of a patient, comprising:

placing an endocutter into a treatment site of the patient;

applying a first deployment of staples of a first staple shape onto or into a first tissue with the endocutter; and

applying a second deployment of staples of a second staple shape onto or into a second tissue with the endocutter,

wherein each of the staples is integrally formed with a feeder belt.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first deployment of staples and the second deployment of staples are performed without removing the endocutter from the treatment site of the patient.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first staple shape is different from the second staple shape.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endocutter includes a cutting element for cutting tissue.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein deployment of staples includes separating a deployed staple from an attachment element.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the staples is attached to the feeder belt by way of an attachment element.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the attachment comprises of a tab element.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein deployment of the staples comprises of frangibly separating the staple from the tab element.

9. A surgical method of treating tissue of a patient, comprising:

placing an endocutter into a treatment site of the patient;

clamping a tissue between the endocutter;

deploying a first plurality of staples of a first staple shape onto or into a first tissue portion with the endocutter; and

deploying a second plurality of staples of a second staple shape onto or into a second tissue portion with the endocutter,

wherein each of the staples is integrally formed with a feeder belt.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first deploymen of staples and the second deployment of staples are performed without removing the endocutter from the treatment site of the patient.

11. A surgical method of treating tissue of a patient, comprising:

placing an endocutter into a first treatment site of the patient;

deploying a first plurality of staples of a first staple shape onto or into a first tissue with the endocutter at the first treatment site;

placing the endocutter into a second treatment site of the patient; and

deploying a second plurality of staples of a second staple shape onto or into a second tissue with the endocutter at the second treatment site,

wherein each of the staples is integrally formed with a feeder belt.
