Abstract

Embodiments may include a method of adjusting power in a distributed generation management system. The method may include receiving, by a processor, real-time load requirement data of an energy resources (ER) site. The method may also include receiving, by the processor, real-time energy generation (EG) data from the ER site. The method may further include determining, by the processor, a net power generation at a first level from the real-time load requirement data and the real-time energy generation data. The method may include receiving, by the processor, a first request from a utility to increase or decrease the net power generation from the first level. The method may also include determining a benefit complying with the first request. The method may further include estimating a benefit of not complying with the first request. The method may also include determining whether the determined benefit is greater than the estimated benefit.

Claims (99)

1. A method of adjusting power in a distributed generation management system, the method comprising:

receiving, by a processor, real-time load requirement data from a site gateway of an energy resource (ER) site, the real-time load requirement data corresponding to a load requirement of the ER site;

receiving, by the processor, real-time energy generation (EG) data from an inverter on the ER site, the real-time EG data corresponding to an amount of energy generated by an EG system associated with the ER site;

determining, by the processor, a net power generation at a first level from the real-time load requirement data and the real-time energy generation data;

receiving, by the processor, a first request from a utility associated with the ER site to increase or decrease the net power generation from the first level;

determining a benefit of complying with the first request;

estimating a benefit of not complying with the first request, comprising:

forecasting a second request at a future time from the utility to increase or decrease the net power generation by the EG system,

forecasting the net power generation to be at a second level at the future time, and

determining from the second request and the net power generation at the second level the benefit of complying with the second request at the future time;

determining whether the determined benefit of complying with the first request is greater than or equal to the estimated benefit of complying with the second request;

complying with the first request when the determined benefit of complying with the first request is greater than or equal to the estimated benefit of complying with the second request; and

not complying with the first request when the estimated benefit of complying with the second request is greater than the determined benefit of complying with the first request, wherein:

the site gateway is communicatively coupled to the inverter,

the EG system is connected to a utility grid, and

complying with the first request comprises decreasing or increasing the net power generation by:

adjusting an electrical characteristic of the inverter,

charging or discharging an energy storage device on the ER site, or

decreasing or increasing the load requirement.

2. A method of adjusting power in a distributed generation management system, the method comprising:

receiving, by a processor, real-time load requirement data of an energy resource (ER) site, the real-time load requirement data corresponding to a load requirement of the ER site;

receiving, by the processor, real-time energy generation (EG) data from the ER site, the real-time EG data corresponding to an amount of energy generated by an EG system associated with the ER site;

determining, by the processor, a net power generation at a first level from the real-time load requirement data and the real-time energy generation data;

receiving, by the processor, a first request from a utility associated with the ER site to increase or decrease the net power generation from the first level;

determining a benefit of complying with the first request;

estimating a benefit of not complying with the first request, comprising:

forecasting a second request at a future time from the utility to increase or decrease the net power generation by the EG system,

forecasting the net power generation to be at a second level at the future time, and

determining from the second request and the net power generation at the second level the benefit of complying with the second request at the future time;

determining whether the determined benefit of complying with the first request is greater than the estimated benefit of complying with the second request;

complying with the first request upon determining that the benefit of complying with the first request is greater than the estimated benefit of complying with the second request;

not complying with the first request upon determining that the benefit of complying with the first request is less than the estimated benefit of complying with the second request, wherein complying with the first request comprises at least one of:

decreasing the amount of energy generated by a first amount,

increasing the amount of energy generated by a second amount,

decreasing the load requirement by a third amount, and

increasing the load requirement by a fourth amount.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein complying with the second request comprises at least one of:

decreasing the amount of energy generated by the EG system at the future time by a fifth amount,

increasing the amount of energy generated by the EG system at the future time by a sixth amount,

decreasing the load requirement of the ER site by the third amount, and

increasing the load requirement of the ER site by the fourth amount.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

if the determined benefit of complying with the first request is greater than the estimated benefit of complying with the second request, complying with the first request; or

if the estimated benefit of complying with the second request is greater than the determined benefit of complying with the first request, complying with the second request.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein forecasting the second request comprises analyzing historical electricity price data.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein forecasting the net power generation comprises estimating the load requirement at the future time from weather data and programmed setpoints for ER site loads.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein:

the ER site comprises a building, and

forecasting the net power generation comprises estimating the load requirement at the future time based on dimensions of the building.

8. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

communicating to a user at least one of the determined benefit of complying with the first request and the estimated benefit of complying with the second request, and

prompting the user to choose whether to comply with the first request.

9. The method of claim 2 , wherein decreasing the amount of energy generated comprises adjusting an electrical characteristic of a photovoltaic inverter.

10. The method of claim 2 , wherein increasing the load requirement comprises powering up an appliance.

11. The method of claim 2 , wherein increasing the load requirement comprises storing power in a battery.

12. The method of claim 2 , wherein decreasing the load requirement comprises powering down an appliance.

13. The method of claim 2 , wherein decreasing the load requirement comprises releasing charge from a battery.

14. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first request from the utility is associated with an economic incentive.

15. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining whether the determined benefit of complying with the first request is greater than the estimated benefit of complying with the second request comprises a confidence level of greater than 80%.

16. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

communicating to a user at least one of the determined benefit of complying with the first request and the estimated benefit of complying with the second request.

17. The method of claim 2 , wherein the future time is hours after the first request.

18. A method of controlling an energy-consuming device, the method comprising:

receiving, at a processor, an inquiry from the energy-consuming device on an energy resources (ER) site to increase energy consumed by the energy-consuming device;

determining, by the processor, a cost of the increase in energy at a first time;

estimating, by the processor, a cost of the increase in energy at a second time comprising:

forecasting a request at the second time from a utility associated with the ER site to increase or decrease power generation from the ER site,

forecasting a load requirement of the ER site at the second time,

adding the increase in energy to the load requirement of the ER site at the second time,

forecasting a power generation from the ER site at the second time, and

determining the cost of the increase in energy at the second time from the request, the load requirement, the increase in energy, and the power generation;

comparing, by the processor, the determined cost at the first time to the estimated cost at the second time; and

if the determined cost at the first time is less than the estimated cost at the second time, powering up the energy-consuming device after the first time and before the second time; or

if the estimated cost at the second time is less than the determined cost at the first time, powering up the energy-consuming device at the second time.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein:

the request at the second time from the utility is associated with an economic incentive, and

the estimated cost is a function of the request, the load requirement, the increase in energy, and the power generation.

20. A distributed generation management system, the system comprising:

an energy resources (ER) site comprising an energy generation (EG) system and an inverter, the EG system connected to a utility grid;

a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to the inverter; and

a control server comprising a processor;

wherein the processor is programmed to:

receive real-time load requirement data from the gateway of the ER site, the real-time load requirement data corresponding to a load requirement of the ER site;

receive real-time EG data from the inverter on the ER site, the real-time EG data corresponding to an amount of energy generated by the EG system;

determine a net power generation at a first level from the real-time load requirement data and the real-time EG data;

receive a first request from a utility associated with the ER site to increase or decrease the net power generation from the first level;

determine a benefit of complying with the first request;

estimate a benefit of not complying with the first request, comprising:

forecasting a second request at a future time from the utility to increase or decrease the net power generation by the EG system,

forecasting the net power generation to be at a second level at the future time, and

determine from the second request and the net power generation at the second level the benefit of complying with the second request at the future time;

determine whether the determined benefit of complying with the first request is greater than or equal to the estimated benefit of complying with the second request;

comply with the first request when the determined benefit of complying with the first request is greater than or equal to the estimated benefit of complying with the second request; and

not comply with the first request when the estimated benefit of complying with the second request is greater than the determined benefit of complying with the first request, wherein:

the processor complies with the first request by sending a control message to the EG system to:

adjust an electrical characteristic of the inverter,

charge or discharge an energy storage device on the ER site, or

decrease or increase the load requirement.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the EG system comprises a photovoltaic system.
