Abstract

A recovery device assembly comprises an actuator element and a mechanically radially expandable and contractible recovery device operably connected to the actuator element is provided. The recovery device has proximal and distal toroidal balloon blocking elements and a central portion between the blocking elements. The recovery device is at least partially placeable in a first, radially collapsed configuration and in a second, radially expanded configuration by manipulation of the actuator element. When in the second, radially expanded configuration, the proximal and distal blocking elements have radial dimensions greater than the radial dimension of the central portion thereby at least partially defining a collection chamber at the central portion. Also provided are methods of isolating an organ and recovering blood from an organ that use the recovery device assembly provided.

Claims (45)

1. A recovery device comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

an inflatable element at one or more of the proximal end and the distal end of the recovery device, the inflatable element configured to be inflated from a deflated state to an inflated state, the inflatable element including a passageway;

a central section between the proximal end and the distal end of the recovery device, the central section positioned at least partially within the passageway of the inflatable element;

a collection chamber adjacent to the central section and configured to collect a liquid;

a recovery lumen positioned within the central section and including a fenestration, the fenestration configured to allow fluid passage between the collection chamber and the recovery lumen; and

an expandable structure positioned at least partially within the central section and configured to expand from a collapsed state to an expanded state,

wherein the recovery device is configured to move from a radially collapsed configuration with the inflatable element in the deflated state and the expandable structure in the collapsed state to a radially expanded configuration with the inflatable element in the inflated state and the expandable structure in the expanded state, the proximal end and the distal end of the recovery device each having a radial dimension greater than a radial dimension of the central section when the recovery device is in the radially expanded configuration.

2. The recovery device of claim 1 further comprising:

at least one actuator element coupled to the expandable structure and configured to expand the expandable structure from the collapsed state to the expanded state.

3. The recovery device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable structure is adjacent to the recovery lumen.

4. The recovery device of claim 1 , wherein the radial dimension of the central section is greater when the recovery device is in the radially expanded configuration than in the radially collapsed configuration.

5. The recovery device of claim 1 , wherein the inflatable element and the central section at least partially define the collection chamber.

6. The recovery device of claim 1 , wherein the inflatable element includes a toroidal blocking balloon with an inner radius wall.

7. The recovery device of claim 6 , wherein the central section is coupled to the inner radius wall.

8. The recovery device of claim 1 , wherein the central section is configured for fluid passage therethrough.

9. The recovery device of claim 1 , wherein the central section is configured to expand or collapse independently of the inflation or deflation of the inflatable element.

10. The recovery device of claim 1 , wherein the inflatable element is configured to be inflated or deflated independently of the expansion or collapsing of the expandable structure.

11. The recovery device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable structure is not fixedly attached to the central section.

12. The recovery device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable structure is a braid scaffold.

13. The recovery device of claim 12 , wherein the recovery device is configured to be expanded to different radial diameters by separate expansion of the inflatable element and the braid scaffold.

14. The recovery device of claim 13 , wherein the braid scaffold prevents compression of the central section when the inflatable element is inflated.

15. A method of recovering blood from an organ comprising:

obtaining a recovery device comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

an inflatable element at one or more of the proximal end and the distal end of the recovery device, the inflatable element configured to be inflated from a deflated state to an inflated state, the inflatable element including a passageway;

a central section between the proximal end and the distal end of the recovery device, the central section positioned at least partially within the passageway of the inflatable element;

a collection chamber adjacent to the central section and configured to collect a liquid;

a recovery lumen positioned within the central section and including a fenestration, the fenestration configured to allow fluid passage between the collection chamber and the recovery lumen; and

an expandable structure at least partially within the central section,

inserting the recovery device into a patient when the recovery device is in a radially collapsed configuration with the inflatable element in the deflated state and the expandable structure in a collapsed state;

expanding the recovery device to a radially expanded configuration by inflating the inflatable element to the inflated state and moving the expandable structure to an expanded state, the proximal end and the distal end of the recovery device each having a radial dimension greater than a radial dimension of the central section when the recovery device is in the radially expanded configuration; and

aspirating blood from the collection chamber through the fenestration and into the recovery lumen.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the inflatable element is a plurality of toroidal balloons including a proximal toroidal balloon at the proximal end of the recovery device and a distal toroidal balloon at the distal end of the recovery device and the expanding step includes inflating each of the plurality of toroidal balloons.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of toroidal balloons each include an inner radius wall and the central section is coupled to each inner radius wall.

18. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

expanding the central section as the expandable structure moves to the expanded state.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the recovery device further comprises an actuator element coupled to the expandable structure and the method includes manipulating the actuator element to move the expandable structure to the expanded state.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the expanding step includes expanding the recovery device from a first radially collapsed configuration to a second radially expanded configuration by manipulation of the actuator element.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the recovery device includes a proximal blocking element including the proximal toroidal balloon and a distal blocking element including the distal toroidal balloon and the expanding the recovery device step includes inflating the proximal blocking element and the distal blocking element such that the proximal blocking element and the distal blocking element each have a radial dimension greater than a radial dimension of the central section.

22. The method of claim 21 further comprising:

expanding the central section by manipulating the actuator element to provide a non-compressible bypass lumen for the flow of blood; and

creating the collection chamber between the proximal blocking element and the distal blocking element during the expanding the recovery device step.
