Abstract

In a printed article, pigment flakes are magnetically aligned so as to form curved patterns in a plurality of cross-sections normal a continuous imaginary line, wherein radii of the curved patterns increase along the imaginary line from the first point to the second point. When light is incident upon the aligned pigment flakes from a light source, light reflected from the aligned pattern forms a bright image which appears to gradually change its shape and move from one side of the continuous imaginary line to another side of the continuous imaginary line when the substrate is tilted with respect to the light source.

Claims (47)

1. A method of forming an optically variable device, comprising:

providing a substrate,

applying an ink or paint comprising pigment flakes to a surface of the substrate, wherein the pigment flakes comprise a magnetic or magnetizable material for magnetic alignment of the flakes, and

aligning the pigment flakes with a magnet having a planar surface; wherein the planar surface is a square or a diamond, and North and South poles of the magnet are disposed at ends of a diagonal of the square or the diamond;

wherein the pigment flakes are aligned by the magnet so as to form a curved pattern in a cross-section along a line between the North and South poles;

wherein pigment flakes in a center of the curved pattern are parallel to the substrate;

wherein in additional cross-sections parallel to the line between the North and South poles the pigment flakes form a curved pattern in which a radii of the curved pattern decreases as the additional cross-sections move towards either a first point or a second point of a continuous imaginary line that is at a right angle to the line between the North and South poles;

wherein at least some of the pigment flakes are parallel to the substrate along the continuous imaginary line; and,

wherein, when light is incident upon the pigment flakes from a light source, light reflected from the aligned pattern forms a bright image which appears to gradually change its shape and move from one side of the continuous imaginary line to another side of the continuous imaginary line when the substrate is tilted with respect to the light source.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the curved patterns are concave patterns.

3. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the curved patterns are convex patterns.

4. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises a transparent plastic support.

5. The method as defined in claim 4 , wherein a concentration of the pigment flakes in the ink or paint is between 4 and 25% by weight.

6. The method as defined in claim 5 , wherein a concentration of the pigment flakes in the ink or paint is between 4 and 14% by weight.

7. The method as defined in claim 6 , further comprising providing a background coating onto the substrate before applying the ink or paint containing pigment flakes, wherein the background coating comprises non-magnetic ink or paint.

8. The method as defined in claim 7 , wherein the background coating forms an image.

9. A method of forming a printed article, comprising:

providing a substrate and an ink or paint comprising pigment flakes comprising a magnetic or magnetizable material for magnetic alignment of the pigment flakes, supported by the substrate; and

aligning the pigment flakes with a plurality of magnets arranged in a zigzag or wave arrangement, wherein a North and South pole is present on opposite side surfaces of each of the plurality of magnets;

wherein the aligned pigment flakes form a curved pattern in a cross-section between the North and South poles;

wherein pigment flakes in a center of the curved pattern are parallel to the substrate;

wherein in additional cross-sections parallel to the line between the North and South poles, the pigment flakes form a curved pattern in which a radii of the curved pattern decreases as the additional cross-sections move towards either a first point or a second point of a continuous imaginary line that is at a right angle to the line between the North and South poles;

wherein at least some of the pigment flakes are parallel to the substrate along the continuous imaginary line and wherein the continuous imaginary line is a zigzag or wavy line between the first and second points; and,

wherein, when light is incident upon the pigment flakes from a light source, light reflected from the image region forms a bright zigzag or wave which appears to move when the substrate is tilted with respect to the light source.

10. The method as defined in claim 9 , wherein top surfaces of the plurality of magnets form a zigzag or wavy line.

11. The method as defined in claim 9 , further comprising providing a background coating onto the substrate before applying the ink or paint containing pigment flakes, wherein the background coating comprises non-magnetic ink or paint.

12. The method as defined in claim 9 , wherein the plurality of magnets is a stack of flexible magnets, wherein an edge of the stack forms the zigzag or wave.

13. The method as defined in claim 12 , wherein the pigment flakes are color-shifting flakes.

14. The method as defined in claim 12 , wherein the zigzag or wave includes at least three sections.

15. The method as defined in claim 14 , wherein the substrate comprises a transparent plastic support.

16. The method as defined in claim 15 , wherein a concentration of the pigment flakes in the ink or paint is between 4 and 25% by weight.

17. The method as defined in claim 16 , wherein a concentration of the pigment flakes in the ink or paint is between 4 and 14% by weight.

18. A method of forming an optically variable device, comprising:

providing a substrate,

applying an ink or paint comprising pigment flakes to a surface of the substrate, wherein the pigment flakes comprise a magnetic or magnetizable material for magnetic alignment of the flakes, and

aligning the pigment flakes with a magnetic assembly having a tapered extrusion cut though the center of the assembly, and North and South poles of the magnetic assembly are disposed at ends of a diagonal of the magnetic assembly;

wherein the pigment flakes are aligned by the magnet so as to form a curved pattern in a cross-section along a line between the North and South poles;

wherein at least some of the pigment flakes in the center of the curved pattern are parallel to the substrate

wherein in additional cross-sections parallel to the line between the North and South poles the pigment flakes form a curved pattern in which a radii of the curved pattern decreases as the additional cross-sections move towards either a first point or a second point or a continuous imaginary line that is at a right angle to the line between the North and South poles; and,
